Benfica vs Liverpool Analysis

Benfica host Liverpool at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon after a dramatic 1-0 away win to see off Ajax in the last round to progress through to the Champions League quarterfinals.

Liverpool, meanwhile, had an uncomfortable night at home against a fired-up Inter Milan side, but had nonetheless done enough in the first leg to go through.

Liverpool’s Consistent Form

While the Reds of Liverpool were forced to weather a mini-storm against Inter Milan at Anfield in the last round, it’s nonetheless fair to say that’s been one of the few blemish’s on Liverpool’s record so far this season.

In fact, that 1-0 loss to Inter is Liverpool’s only loss in 2022 so far (16W, 3D, 1L), and while Jurgen Klopp might avoid the issue, the chance to become the first English team ever to win the quadruple (Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League) must be on their minds to some degree.

With Liverpool already having the League Cup in hand and well in the race for the other three titles, it could make for an absolutely historic record-breaking season should Liverpool hold focus here.

Benfica Pull Off Shocker in Amsterdam

Benfica pulled off one of the surprises of the tournament so far as they ousted Ajax in their home city of Amsterdam to progress through to the next round.

Benfica was under the cosh for a lot of that game with Ajax out-shooting them 4-to-1 and holding an 11 to 0 attacking advantage from open play as well.

However, striker Darwin Nunez got the late goal for the Portuguese side after an Andre Onana error at the back which saw Benfica move through to face Liverpool in this year’s quarterfinals.

Benfica vs Liverpool Prediction

Benfica not only look to be out of the Portuguese title race this season, but also the race for Europe as they come off a poor 3-2 loss to Braga last week.

That means sole focus lies with this competition as they got knocked out of the Taca de Portugal Cup earlier in the season also.

While Benfica may have all their eggs in one basket ahead of this one, Liverpool will likely be a lot more distracted as they have an absolutely mammoth game away at Manchester City coming up this weekend.

Normally, European concerns trump domestic concerns but not this time as with only a single point separating both sides at the top of the table, with Liverpool owning a better overall goal difference than City, the result in that game will likely be pivotal in determining this year’s Premier League champion.

Liverpool likely won’t want to extend themselves here because of that and just look to take this tie back to Liverpool in good shape.

We like the home side Benfica in this one on the +1.5 handicap line to keep it tight on Tuesday night over in Portugal against Liverpool.
