Euro 2024 Group A Preview & Best Picks
The first of the groups taking place in this yearโs European Championships sees three-time winners Germany get paired up with Scotland, Hungary, and Switzerland in what is set up to be a competitive group overall.
With newly appointed manager Julian Nagelsmann looking to lead Germany into their first major tournament on home soil in almost two decades, itโs no surprise to see Die Mannschaft go in as heavy favorites to top this group.
However, with a Scotland team that looked good in qualifying, plus two teams in both Switzerland and Hungary that Germany have had limited success against across recent years (not having beaten Switzerland since 2008 and Hungary handing them a 1-0 loss in the Nations League last time out as well), Germany likely wonโt have it all their own way when Group A kicks off on June 14th.
Germany
To Win Group A (-260) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+550)
Since the dismissal of Hansi Flick at the end of last year, Germany has noticed an uptick in form under Julian Nagelsmann, beating World Cup finalists France twice in back-to-back meetings along with securing a 2-1 victory against the Netherlands back in March as well.
With players such as Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, and Florian Wirtz, Germanyโs high-press style with pace down the wings is going to be very hard for any team to deal with in this competition. Mix in that voracious home support on top and the Germans are deserved favorites to top Group A.
Switzerland
To Win Group A (+500) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+6500)
A team that historically has always tended to navigate its way out of difficult groups in major competitions, needing to go all the way back to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa to find the last time Switzerland failed to qualify from a group stage, it’s no real surprise to see this experienced Swiss side being priced up as second favorites to progress from this group.
However, despite their solid tournament form, Switzerland looks a lot more fragile than in years past, finishing runners-up behind Romania during qualifying and even more concerning than that, allowing over twice as many goals as the Romanians did also.
The Swiss could well struggle to land a top-two spot in this group as a result.
Hungary
To Win Group A (+600) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+8000)
Third favorites Hungary are well-positioned to progress in this group with players such as RB Leipzigโs Willi Orban and Liverpoolโs Dominik Szoboszlai in its roster.
The Hungarians finished top of their group during qualifying, failing to lose a single game over that stretch and allowing an average of just 0.88 goals per game against opponents also, one of the lowest marks in qualifying.
Hungary havenโt lost an international match since September 2022 and appears well-poised to progress here given their good recent form.
Scotland
To Win Group A (+800) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+8000)
With a strong midfield unit comprised of John McGinn, Scott McTominay, and Billy Gilmour, the Scots certainly wonโt lack for work ethic when it comes to this tournament kicking off on June 14th.
However, since an outstanding qualification campaign which saw them finish second behind group leaders Spain and lose just one game across that run as well, the wheels have fallen off a little for the Scots in the run-up to this tournament, going on an extended stretch of seven straight games without a win prior to a lackluster 2-0 victory against minnows Gibraltar in a friendly just a few days ago.
On what is already a thin roster to begin with, the Scots may suffer more than most after what has been a hard domestic club campaign, with their recent indifferent form likely not helping them here either.
Euro 2024 Group A Ultimate Picks & Predictions
Germany looks like a refreshed force under new manager Julian Nagelsmann and should finish at the top of this group ahead of the rest of the competition.
The battle for second will be far more tightly contested however, but Hungary has shown across recent tournaments that theyโre a serious outfit now on the world stage, and we expect them to hold the edge over a determined Swiss side for second place in this group.
Scotland looks like the team that could well struggle the most in this group, and weโre backing them to finish bottom of Group A overall.
