Euro 2024 Group B Preview & Top Picks

The proverbial ‘Group of Death’, Group B, for this year’s European Championship sees joint-record holders Spain go up against not only current holders Italy, but also World Cup finalists from 2018 and semi-finalists from 2022, Croatia as well.

Albania rounds out the group in what should be an extremely competitive battle for qualification between these teams.

Spain heads into this group as favorites at current odds of -145, with Italy sitting in the second spot at +225, Croatia in third at +450, and Albania coming in as rank outsiders to top Group B priced up at a massive +2200, the biggest outright group winner price of any team involved in this tournament.

Spain

To Win Group B (-145) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+700)

Spain will be well aware of each of their current opponents in this group after facing both Italy and Croatia in the Nations League tournament last year.

Spain put Italy out in the semi-finals of that competition, a revenge game it could be argued from their exit at the hands of the Italians in the semi-final of this same European Championships back in 2021.

The Spanish team then went on to defeat Croatia in the final of that Nations League via a penalty shootout which is a sign of just how close and competitive this group is poised to be with three of Europe’s top eight teams all in contention.

Italy

The defending European champions Italy will look to get back on track in international football after unbelievably missing both of the previous two World Cups for the first time in their history, so the Italian faithful will be desperate for repeat success in this particular tournament.

The Italians of course set a new record during that last campaign when they won the Euros, going unbeaten across a 37-match span, the longest unbeaten run in international history.

However, the Italians looked far from that same juggernaut side during their qualification route, barely edging out Ukraine for second place and losing both games outright to England also.

Croatia

To Win Group B (+450) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+4000)

Old masters Croatia know how to consistently get it done at the top level of international football, booking themselves into yet another World Cup semi-final appearance back in 2022, and following that up with a Nations League final appearance against Spain last summer as well.

With a midfield containing Luka Modric, Mateo Kovacic, and Marcelo Brozovic, that hardly comes as a surprise, but with each of those players now over the age of 30, 38 in the case of Luka Modric, combined with a relatively inexperienced defense, the question is can Croatia continue to go deep in tournaments under this current squad?

Albania

To Win Group B (+2200) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+25000)

Poor Albania couldn’t have asked for a much tougher group than what they were handed here in what will be only their second-ever appearance at a major international tournament.

However, there are signs for optimism as Albania topped their group during qualification for the first time ever, beating out both the Czech Republic and Poland for first place.

Even more impressive was the fact that Albania allowed just four goals across that entire campaign, with only France and Portugal doing better in terms of goals allowed, so Albania will hope their defense can grind out some more positive results for them in this group.

With Barcelona prodigy Gavi out through injury for this tournament, alongside the highly-talented Yeremy Pino also, Spain has arguably been hit harder than any other team heading into this tournament, and that loss could prove pivotal for them in terms of their creative play in what is set up to be such a tight group.

Italy will be adamant that Spain’s loss could be their gain, but the Italians just haven’t looked convincing when facing the top teams across the last couple of years, losing to England (twice), Spain, and suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of Germany also.

Croatia appeared like a fading force during qualifying, finishing runners-up behind Turkey, and losing to both Wales and Turkey during that qualification run also.

However, they are still one of the most clutch teams in world football, and their experience alone may be enough to see them progress from this group when all is said and done.

Albania, despite their impressive qualifying campaign, just don’t have the players to compete against the big boys in this group, and should finish bottom of the group as a result.

With so many potential draws in play in this group, third spot may not qualify as well so we’re going to take a shot with Italy not to qualify from this group at huge odds of +500.
