Euro 2024 Group C Preview & Picks for Group C

Group C of this year’s Euros sees 2020 competition finalists England look to go one better this time around by winning the tournament outright, something both bookmakers and the public at large believe they have a real shot of doing currently priced up as the competition favorites ahead of kickoff on June 14th.

Facing them in this group is a team well known to England across recent tournaments in Denmark, with England knocking the Danes out in extra-time in the semi-final of Euro 2020, along with Serbia and Slovenia rounding out the group also.

England, to nobody’s great surprise, are the heavy favorites to top this group at current odds of -250, with Denmark sitting in second spot at +400, Serbia in third at odds of +800, and finally Slovenia coming in as the group outsiders at a price of +1200.

England

To Win Group C (-250) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+300)

England should for all intents and purposes be coming into this tournament as the defending champions after arguably giving away the final against Italy in London three years ago.

Luke Shaw gave the hosts the early lead in the opening minutes of that game with England looking in devastating form going forward before pragmatism took over from the bench and Gareth Southgate pulled his charges back, allowing Italy to build in confidence over the course of the game and equalize midway through the second half, subsequently going on to win and lift the trophy on penalties.

England may have learned a harsh lesson in that final, and if they allow their offensive shackles to be let off here, this truly is an electric team going forward, able to utilize the talents of Europe’s top scorer Harry Kane, Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, Manchester City’s Phil Foden, as well as Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham also, as just a few of the names gracing this potent English lineup.

Denmark

To Win Group C (+400) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+3500)

In a group that will pair two of the teams that battled through the qualifying route together, Denmark will once again face off against Slovenia in the battle to progress from this group.

Both Denmark and Slovenia finished on equal points in Group H of Euro 2024 qualifying, with the Slovenians owning the much better goal difference over Denmark, but unfortunately for them losing the head-to-head battle with a loss in Copenhagen.

Despite topping the group overall, Denmark were far from impressive over the course of that qualification run, losing to both Northern Ireland and Kazakhstan outright, and will need to improve drastically if they’re going to challenge for a top spot in this group.

Serbia

To Win Group C (+800) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+8000)

There perhaps isn’t a more potent attacking side in world football on their respective day than this Serbian team, able to utilize the talents of Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic, former Lazio playmaker Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who partners new signing Neymar over at Al Hilal, as well as all-time record goal scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic who also joins forces with Neymar and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic at Al Hilal.

That attacking threat for Serbia would give even England pause for concern, but it’s in their defense where Serbia has traditionally struggled, giving up three goals apiece to both Switzerland and Cameroon during the recent World Cup, and keeping just one clean sheet across their last ten international matches also, that coming against Cyprus in a friendly last time out.

If Serbia can do a better job of marshaling that defense however, this remains a dangerous team just based on attacking threat alone.

Slovenia

To Win Group C (+1200) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+20000)

Group outsiders Slovenia make up the final team in this group but shouldn’t be dismissed completely out of hand here as they rode Denmark incredibly close during qualifying as stated previously.

A large part of that success for Slovenia was in their rock-solid defense which allowed the fewest goals out of any team in the group, with the Slovenians shutting out San Marino (twice), Finland, and Northern Ireland during their qualifying run.

Denmark knows how difficult this Slovenian team can be, failing to beat them in Ljubljana back in June of last year. That dynamic could play out once again in what’s expected to be one of the most competitive groups to secure second place in.

Euro 2024 Group C Ultimate Prediction

In what’s been an incredibly productive last few years for the Danes in international football, coming up short on penalties against eventual finalists Croatia back in the 2018 World Cup, and pushing England all the way to extra-time in the Euro 2020 semi-finals as well, the first signs of serious decline for Denmark seemed to take place for them during the previous World Cup 18 months ago, with Denmark’s recent Euro qualification run doing little to alleviate those concerns either.

Denmark finished bottom of their group back in World Cup 2022, being the only team to register zero wins against either France, Australia, or Tunisia.

More concerningly for the Danes is that they scored just one total goal across that group phase as well, with leading lights such as Christian Eriksen and Thomas Delaney all well over the age of 30 at this point, Denmark may have to place too much pressure on the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojberg or Rasmus Hojlund to deliver offensively for them in this tournament.

With not much separating the bottom three teams in this group by our estimation, the Danes not to qualify at a healthy +225 looks like the best value bet to make in this one.
