Euro 2024 Group D Preview & Best Picks
Euro 2024 Group D sees 2022 World Cup finalists France face the Netherlands, Austria, and Poland in what’s set up to be an extremely competitive group overall.
France faced the Netherlands during qualifying, coming out on top in that group and beating the Netherlands in both of their heads-to-heads by convincing margins also.
Austria and Poland meanwhile come into this one as the group outsiders, but with potentially three spots up for grabs in order to make it through to the next round, both the Austrians and the Polish will still nevertheless feel quietly confident of making it out of this group.
France are the favorites to top the group at odds of -200, with the Netherlands coming in as second favorites at +300. Austria and Poland make up the rear at odds of +800 and +1100 respectively to top the group.
France
To Win Group D (-200) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+340)
What can be said about this France side that hasn’t already been said? The French have absolutely dominated world football across the last few years, reaching no less than a final in three of the last four major international tournaments held (European Finalists 2016, World Cup Winners 2018, and World Cup Finalists 2022).
This French side have immense strength in depth and the experience to go incredibly deep in this competition, so it’s no surprise to see them not only favorites to top this group, but also go in as second favorites to lift the trophy as a whole behind only England.
Netherlands
To Win Group D (+300) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+1600)
The Netherlands suffered just two losses during qualifying, both to France, and held a sizeable five-point gap between themselves and next best Greece in their qualifying group also.
That said, that 4-0 demolition at the hands of the French in Paris just over a year ago highlights just how far this Netherlands team is from the truly elite sides in world football.
Even in their respectable loss on penalties to eventual winners Argentina in the World Cup 18 months ago, the Dutch were forced to rally late in a game Argentina was dominating.
Wout Weghorst popped up with two late goals, the last of which came 11 minutes deep into injury time, which was enough to rescue the Netherlands, at least for a short time, and push the game into extra time.
Austria
To Win Group D (+800) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+8000)
Austria enjoyed a highly impressive route to this tournament through qualifying, narrowly missing out on the top spot in the group by just one point to first place Belgium, and taking a point off Belgium in Brussels in the process.
With a 2-0 friendly win over hosts Germany late last year, and a 6-1 demolition of Group F’s Turkey two weeks ago as well, Austria are coming into this tournament in some really electric form and should not be underestimated in terms of progressing from this group, especially with players such as David Alaba, Marcel Sabitzer, and Christoph Baumgartner in their lineup, just a few of the players that could well stand out for Austria in this competition.
Poland
To Win Group D (+1100) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+10000)
Poland can arguably count themselves rather fortunate to have made it this far after finishing third in their qualification group behind Albania and the Czech Republic, and needing a penalty shootout in the playoffs to get past Wales in order to punch their ticket into this year’s finals.
Defeats against the aforementioned Albania and Czech Republic, as well as minnows Moldova, do raise some major concerns however about Poland’s ability to progress from this group, especially with heavy hitters like France and the Netherlands involved, and with just four wins across their last twelve competitive games in all, Poland have it all to do in this one in order to make it out of the group.
Euro 2024 Group D Prediction
With up to three teams potentially qualifying from each prospective group, Austria looks like a solid price to progress given they’re up against an overvalued Netherlands side and a vastly underperforming Poland team also.
France should top this group with relative ease, but the battle for second is definitely open, especially for Austria, who look like a completely revamped team under Ralf Rangnick, with attendances for national games ballooning across the last couple of years as the energy for Austrian football returns after years of relative apathy.
With everyone likely getting three points against the struggling Polish given all of their recent issues, another point is likely all it would take to progress from this group, and at -120, we believe Austria has what it takes to book their place into the knockout rounds of this year’s Euros.
