Ferencvaros vs Shamrock Rovers Analysis
Hungarian champions Ferencvaros take on Irish league leaders Shamrock Rovers on Thursday over in Budapest with the Irish side looking to qualify for their first major European competition in ten years while Ferencvaros looks to rebound off being bounced out of the Champions League by Azerbaijani side Qarabag last week.
The two sides have never met in European competition previously but shots have already been fired prior to this first meeting with Ferenvaros’ sporting director calling Shamrock Rovers the inferior side who play a dour “British style of physical football”, which hasn’t gone down too well with fans and supporters of the South Dublin club.
Travel Hampers Shamrock Rovers Efforts
The situation at Dublin airport continues to go on with not only a backlog of travelers and flights getting cancelled, but also the army called in at points to manage the crisis.
That difficulty hasn’t spared Shamrock Rovers either as their recent charter flight to Budapest was cancelled through Dublin airport and they were forced to reroute through Shannon, a detour which hasn’t done them any favors with a huge top-two clash looming against Dundalk this weekend as well.
However, with European competition secured through at least the Europa Conference League this season, Shamrock Rovers have at least a small bit of pressure off their shoulders ahead of this match.
Groupama Arena Far From A Fortress
A 4-0 victory over Fehervar at the weekend has Ferencvaros in some pretty good form domestically, but they’ll no doubt be concerned by their two most recent European ties at their home arena.
Slovan Bratislava came to the Hungarian capital last month and handed Ferencvaros a 2-1 loss only for Qarabag to then follow that up with a 3-1 win in Hungary just last week as well to knock Ferencvaros out of the Champions League.
Ferencvaros will be hoping it’s third time lucky here at home against Shamrock Rovers on Thursday.
Ferencvaros vs Shamrock Rovers Prediction
Ferencvaros are going off on the -1 handicap line at -138, and that’s the way we’re looking to play this one on Thursday.
While Shamrock Rovers have proven themselves as a tough out over this campaign and will no doubt be confident of getting at least a draw in Hungary, both the timing of this weekend’s Dundalk match plus the ongoing travel chaos in Dublin couldn’t be worse for the Hoops, and while we expect them to put up a spirited effort in this one, Ferencvaros should nevertheless have enough quality to win and cover at home here on Thursday.
Take Ferencvaros -1 on the goal spread as your play for Thursday’s Europa League showdown against Shamrock Rovers.
