Huracan vs River Plate Analysis

Two teams tied on points clash on Sunday over in the Argentinian Liga Profesional as River Plate travels to the Estadio Tomas Adolfo Duco to take on Huracan this weekend.

After a slow start to the season, River Plate has picked up two straight wins heading into Sunday’s game and face a team in Huracan who is in some good form of their own right now, running unbeaten over their last four games.

All of the last five head-to-head’s between the two teams have been hotly contested with River Plate winning two, Huracan winning one with two draws apiece.

Results Yet To Catch Up To River Plate’s Underlying Data

While River Plate ownsa respectable scoring record this season, bagging an average of 1.4 goals per game so far this year, those numbers don’t reflect how dominant River Plate have been on the underlying data.

River Plate owns the league’s best expected goals tally at 2.04 xG on average (next best is Racing Club at 1.91 xG) and River Plate also owns the league’s best xG numbers on the road this season also and by quite a huge margin (1.9 xG compared with next best’s Boca Juniors 1.58 xG), so it’s very likely only a matter of time until that success gets converted into actual results for River Plate.

Huracan Continues To Be Solid Defensively

Huracan remains one of only three teams this season to not allow a single goal to opponents at home as they’ve continued to shut down opposing teams at the Adolfo Duco.

Huracan have allowed the second-fewest shots on goal in the league at home this year also (just 6.5 shots per game on average) and rank top-five in overall expected goals against this season as well, which means Huracan will likely be very hard to break down here on Sunday.

Those data points for River Plate are extremely hard to ignore ahead of this clash and we expect them to bounceback from a recent Copa Libertadores loss to Velez Sarsfield in midweek with a win here on Sunday against Huracan.

While Huracan has extra rest ahead of this game and have been impressive defensively this season, their recent four game unbeaten streak came against teams ranked 26th, 24th, 11th and 19th respectively, and River Plate represents a huge step up from that.

Huracan’s only defeat this season came against a very good Racing Club team and this could well end up going the same way on Sunday as Racing Club ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over Huracan in that game and out-shot them 21-7.
