Italy vs Hungary Analysis
Hungary pulled out a surprising win against England on Saturday as they currently top the Group A-3 and travel to an Italian team on Tuesday looking for their first meaningful victory in an international game since last October.
The Italians pulled out an impressive performance themselves against a strong German side on Saturday, drawing 1-1 with Die Mannschaft over in Bologna to take an equal share of the spoils.
Italy hasn’t faced Hungary in a competitive matchup in over 20 years but will no doubt be wary of a team who are in good form right now, winning four of their last five outright, including back-to-back wins on the road as well.
Fast Starts from Hungary
Hungary’s victory over England on Saturday marked the first time in over 60 years that Hungary had registered a win over England in competitive football and they’ll be eager to continue that record-breaking form against Italy here on Tuesday as well.
A massive factor in Hungary’s recent success has been their propensity for quick starts in games, especially on the road, where they’ve opened the scoring in ten of their last 11 games away from home in international competition.
Italy’s Lack of Offense
It’s been a hard road back for the Italians after last year’s historic success in winning the European Championships.
Italy dominated xG chances created and goals scored throughout most of last summer’s tournament, but since then have scored one or fewer goals in eight of their last 11 international matches in all as they continue to struggle in front of goal.
Italy vs Hungary Prediction
The Italians did a great job on Saturday of limiting an extremely high powered German offense and we like them to do that once again here against Hungary on Tuesday also.
Italy have allowed one or fewer goals at home since their defeat against Spain back in October of last year, so should have the capabilities to mount an effective defense against this Dominik Szoboszlai-led Hungarian offense also.
By the same token, Hungary has allowed an average of just 0.4 goals per game across their last five starts internationally, and with Italy’s struggles in front of goal which we highlighted earlier, we could see a goal either way end up deciding this fixture on Tuesday.
