Liverpool vs Benfica Analysis

Liverpool takes a commanding two-goal lead back to Anfield on Wednesday with the tie looking all but a formality at this point (at least the books think so with Liverpool going off at a staggering -20000 to qualify), but can the Portuguese side potentially spring an upset in this one?

Benfica won each of the previous four H2H’s against Liverpool prior to their two most recent meetings, but that last victory for Benfica came over 12 years ago now in a result Liverpool swiftly overturned in the second leg.

Nunez Looks to Impress At Anfield

Darwin Nunez, the Portuguese Primeira Liga’s top scorer this season with 24 goals, has been linked with a potential move to Anfield in the summer with numerous reports suggesting huge interest for the 22 year old Uruguayan striker from Liverpool.

He couldn’t be in better form for that potential move either as he’s scored in three-straight games now for Benfica, including a goal against Liverpool early in the second half of that first leg.

Another solid performance from him here could well mean a move away from the Estadio da Luz in a couple of months.

Reds With One Eye On The Weekend

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp declared he would have liked more of a cushion ahead of this pivotal leg two as he rued his sides missed chances in that first leg.

That’s because Liverpool is in the middle of an extremely tough 11 days, facing Benfica in Portugal last week before a return trip to Manchester City at the weekend in a 2-2 stalemate, only to then host Benfica here on Wednesday once again before another trip to Wembley this Saturday to take on Manchester City in a crucial FA Cup semifinal.

Any chance to rest and rotate players here will be taken by Klopp but Liverpool can’t get careless either.

Liverpool vs Benfica Prediction

With the quadruple still in play, expect Jurgen Klopp to game manage his players in this one with a huge FA Cup semifinal looming against Manchester City at the weekend.

While the Champions League is obviously a lot more important to clubs than the FA Cup, Liverpool have one foot already through to the next round here, and provided they come out of this tie unscathed, they’ll be in good shape to take on City this weekend over in the English capital.

Because of that we like Benfica on the +1.75 handicap line here on Wednesday.

Benfica has been miles off the pace all season over in the Portuguese Primeira Liga and have little else to play for this year, so expect them to go out with a bang in what will be their last big stage performance of the season.

With Darwin Nunez out to impress his potential new club also, expect Benfica to raise their game here and stay within touching distance of what is very likely to be a makeshift Liverpool squad on Wednesday.

Take Benfica +1.75 as the play for Wednesday in their Champions League quarterfinal second leg against Liverpool.
