Liverpool vs Manchester City Analysis
Liverpool face title rivals Manchester City for the second time in six days ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup semifinal after both teams played out a pulsating 2-2 draw last Sunday. The Reds had to come from behind twice through the efforts Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane in that game after Manchester City took leads of 1-0 and 2-1.
Both Liverpool and Manchester City had midweek clashes over in the Champions League on Wednesday playing out draws against Atletico Madrid and Benfica respectively, but each progressed through to the semifinal after winning each of their respective first legs in those ties.
However, Liverpool should be the fresher of the two here as they effectively fielded a backup squad for much of that Benfica game while Manchester City had no such luxury against Atletico Madrid over in Spain in an extremely tight two-leg affair against the La Liga champions.
The two teams have played out consecutive 2-2 draws this season and another tight clash is expected here on Saturday also.
The Hunt For the Quadruple Continues
It’s Liverpool’s first FA Cup semifinal since the 2015/16 season as their quest for the immortal quadruple continues.
With the League Cup already in hand, sitting just one point out of the EPL race in second and heading to a Champions League semifinal against Villarreal in just over a week, Liverpool continue to have all their plates spinning as of right now but face one of their biggest tests this Saturday in their arch-rivals Manchester City, not just for this game but also in the race for the EPL crown and a team they may well meet in next month’s Champions League final also.
Mixed Bag For Manchester City
A team who knows all about multi-title winning seasons, the last side to win the domestic treble, Manchester City back in 2018/19, have won this competition twice since 2010/11 and have reached four FA Cup finals over the last five seasons as well.
However, that’s where the good news ends for City as far as this competition goes as that treble winning season was the only time they made it out of those four semifinal appearances, with their last two coming via a to-nil scoreline as well as they got knocked out in consecutive years by Chelsea last season and Arsenal in the year prior.
Liverpool vs Manchester City Prediction
It’s always an event when two of the best teams in Europe meet head on in a huge knockout clash and Saturday’s matchup should be no different.
With both sides being so closely matched over recent years, that added rest factor for Liverpool here arguably gives them a decided edge in this one in what is an incredibly important game momentum wise for both teams also.
While it’s just the FA Cup on the surface, last year’s win for Chelsea over Manchester City at this stage of the competition gave them a huge mental edge when they met in the Champions League final just a few weeks later and that could be pivotal here also as both sides look for a mental edge approaching a potential European final next month.
We’re edging towards Liverpool in this one as while they have Manchester United on deck for Tuesday night over in the EPL, right now they’re the fresher of the two teams and that could well be key on Saturday.
Take Liverpool +0.25 on the Asian handicap as the play for Saturday in what should be a great FA Cup semifinal between two of Europe’s heavyweights over in the English capital.
