The two favorites of Group G got off to a fast start last week as both earned Match Day 1 wins while keeping clean sheets at the same time. Of course, the headline around this game is Erling Haaland facing his former team for the first time. Doesn’t it just seem convenient that these teams were drawn in the same group? Conspiracy theory or not, this match should provide some fireworks.

Dortmund Proving They Are More Than Just Haaland

It was always going to be difficult to replace Haaland’s scoring abilities and clearly Dortmund is not scoring at will like they were in years past. However, they have done a much better job defensively, although they did just give up three goals to Leipzig over the weekend.

Besides that obvious look-ahead spot from this past weekend, Dortmund had kept four clean sheets in their other six matches, including last week’s 3-0 Champions League win over Copenhagen. Even including their match with Leipzig, they are still allowing less than 1.0 xGA per game in Bundesliga play this season.

Manchester City will of course be much tougher than anyone they have faced to date, but if anyone knows how to stop Haaland, you would have to think this Dortmund team is best equipped.

Dortmund’s manager, Terzic, who has been with Dortmund for multiple years in different roles, along with their defenders, who faced Haaland on a daily basis in practice, both know where Haaland likes to position himself and should have a strong gameplan to contain him.

Cityzens deserving of UCL Favorites?

Of course City is also much more than just a one-man team. They have been one of the best sides in the world before he arrived, but they do seem keen on feeding him the ball and utilizing his striker role which they have been missing the last few years. Haaland has scored 12 goals in eight games in all competitions this season as City keep marching along following their Community Shield loss to Liverpool to open the season.

The Cityzens’ numbers are very strong as you would expect, but what worries me is that they have yet to face a real quality side. Their EPL schedule includes Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Newcastle, Bournemouth and West Ham who have a combined seven wins among them this season.

Manchester City laid similar numbers to Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest this year, both promoted sides, along with Crystal Palace, although that did drop to -2.0 by kickoff. So, in terms of value, are we rating Dortmund in the same level as those teams?

I certainly don’t agree with that and add in the fact that BVB should know better than any other team on how to slow Haaland, this seems like much too big of a number for City to lay.
