Manchester City vs Liverpool Betting Analysis

Two of the biggest clubs in England over the last few seasons clash at the Etihad on Saturday as Liverpool travel the short distance to Manchester to take on Manchester City in a crunch game for both teams this weekend.

Liverpool have exited every competition this season with their sole focus now being on grabbing a Champions League spot for next season.

However, with a current five-point gap between themselves and Newcastle in 5th, and a further seven points behind Tottenham in 4th spot, albeit with two games in hand, that might be easier said than done, especially with Arsenal and Chelsea on the horizon for Liverpool after this weekend’s game against Manchester City.

City meanwhile are fighting wars on all fronts right now, contesting the FA Cup semi-final next month, being drawn against heavyweights Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals, and currently sitting eight points behind Arsenal in the Premier League standings with a game in hand also.

These two teams have been remarkably split in this venue across recent seasons, with each team holding a W1, D2, L1 record in Manchester since November 2020.

Even more than that is the fact that over that same timeframe, the combined scorelines for each team in those games is 8-8, so another close game could be on the cards for Saturday’s matchup also.

Both Teams Coming In With Major Injury Concerns

While Manchester City have confirmed Phil Foden will be out until May, with striker Erling Haaland also looking doubtful for Saturday’s game against Liverpool as well, the injury list at Liverpool is even worse, with seven players currently in jeopardy of missing this weekend’s crunch game in Manchester.

Thiago Alcantara, Calvin Ramsay, and Stefan Bajcetic have all been confirmed out for the Reds ahead of this one with Luis Diaz, Konstantinos Tsimkas, Jordan Henderson, and Darwin Nunez also doubtful for Saturday’s matchup as well.

Manchester City Look Towards Rejuvenated Home Form

After a two-game winless stretch in the Premier League against both Brentford and Everton either side of the World Cup, things have looked significantly better for Manchester City over 2023 as a whole, especially at home.

The Cityzens have now won eight straight games in this venue, including beating league leaders Arsenal and demolishing RB Leipzig 7-0 in the Champions League also, with City ranking, by a wide margin, as the best defensive team in the league at home in defensive xGA since the start of January.

Manchester City vs Liverpool Expert Prediction

Liverpool’s injury crisis could well be the difference maker in this one as Stefan Bajcetic is a player Jurgen Klopp has been gradually building into the squad and his presence, or lack thereof, in a key defensive holding role could hurt Liverpool in this one.

Also factor in Thiago and potentially Henderson and Tsimkas’s absences also, which could leave an under-strength line in key central areas which City can then exploit.

At home, City have been especially ruthless across recent games, winning four straight in the Premier League by a combined scoring margin of 12-3.

While this may well be a lower-scoring affair here on Saturday as Liverpool continue to improve defensively, it’s one nonetheless that City should have the quality to get over the line in on Saturday and close the gap on league leaders Arsenal as a result.

Prediction: Manchester City Win and Under 3.5 (+130)
