Manchester United vs Atletico Madrid Analysis
Since these two teams met three weeks ago, United has won just one of their last three games, although it was an extremely impressive display from star-man Cristiano Ronaldo who bagged a hat-trick over the weekend against Tottenham.
Atletico, meanwhile, has won three straight and look revitalized after a lethargic start to the defense of their La Liga crown earlier in the season.
Atletico Looking Revitalized
With a loss against Levante and really poor performance against Osasuna (despite the final scoreline) in their two games immediately prior to their first leg clash against Manchester United three weeks ago, it looked like the ‘Red Devils’ might be catching the Spanish champions at exactly the right time.
However, knockout European competition has a habit of waking up the top teams across the continent and Atletico finally showed up with a tremendous display in that first leg against Manchester United.
United was under pressure for most of the game and were extremely fortunate to come away with a draw in that one, grabbing an equalizer off a breakaway run from young 19-year-old substitute Anthony Elanga to rescue the draw.
Ronaldo Looking to Repeat Heroics
Coming off a scintillating performance on Saturday at home against Tottenham in which the Portuguese forward scored all three goals for Manchester United, FIFA’s record club goalscorer will now look to take that same form over to Europe in a competition he’s done particularly well in over previous seasons.
Cristiano Ronaldo is the Champions League all-time top goalscorer, even going back to the old European Cup days, scoring a colossal 140 goals across 182 appearances for Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus combined in the competition.
At +120 to be an anytime goalscorer in this game, the books no doubt expect him to potentially add to that tally once again here on Tuesday.
Manchester United vs Atletico Madrid Prediction
This is an extremely tough tie to call from a side perspective as while Atletico are arguably the in-form team right now, Manchester United have shown themselves hard to beat at home, going unbeaten in Old Trafford across their last four games in all and unbeaten in their last three UEFA games against Spanish opposition also.
What we do like however is goals in this one as despite hitting top gear of late form-wise, Atleti are still defensively brittle at the back, keeping just one clean sheet across their last five competitive road games and conceding at least two goals per game across their last three visits to England also.
We expect that to continue here with both teams finding the back of the net and we’re backing Both Teams to Score at -110 to cash on Tuesday in the Champions League Round of 16 clash between Atletico Madrid and Manchester United over in England.
