Manchester United vs Brighton Analysis
New Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag will look to carry over his successful stint at former club Ajax, where he enjoyed a colossal 73.5% win rate over four and a half seasons, to his new home of Manchester. However, that might be easier said than done given how much the Red Devils struggled last season.
A 6th place finish in the league overall was belied by the fact Manchester United won just seven games total at home in 2022, a really poor return for a club as big as Manchester United, with Liverpool winning 16 over that same period and relegated Burnley just one less at six for comparison.
Brighton also won seven home games over 2022 and will be buoyed by the fact they finished in the top half of the league last season, with Graham Potter no doubt looking to replicate that again this year.
The Seagulls continued their solid run on defense last season, giving up the 6th fewest goals in the league overall and the 6th fewest away from home also.
Manchester United have a strong record against Brighton in Old Trafford, winning all six of their six previous head-to-heads here by a combined 12-3 scoreline. However, they did get humbled 4-0 by the Seagulls back in May.
Brighton Look For Strong Start On The Road
Brighton picked up 57% of all their EPL points away from home last season and they’ll hope they can continue their ‘road warriors’ tag ahead of this year also.
Brighton actually ranked 5th in the league on overall away form last season, sitting only just behind heavyweights Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham, so they will no doubt fancy their chances of a result on the road here against Manchester United this weekend.
With Brighton winning all three of their previous three league road season openers in the Premier League as well, expect Graham Potter’s men to be confident of the task awaiting them here on Sunday.
Problems Already Arising For Ten Hag At United
Manager Erik Ten Hag certainly got his first look into what it is like to manage this Manchester United team firsthand with their recent pre-season-friendly trips.
Star frontman Cristiano Ronaldo missed out on all of those pre-season travel games and came back to play a brief 45 minutes at United on Sunday before leaving the ground early along with “many more players” according to Ten Hag.
That level of indiscipline at the club which has been fomenting for years now has seen the Dutchman lay down the hammer hard with this squad, but whether it will have any meaningful effect yet is still too early to say.
Manchester United vs Brighton Prediction
While Brighton have enjoyed a less than spectacular history when traveling to Old Trafford over the last few years, with everything still not fully ironed out at Manchester United in terms of Ten Hag’s rule at the club, we’re taking Brighton +1 here on Sunday against Manchester United.
Brighton gave up just nine goals total on the road over the final four months of last season, the 5th best record in the league overall, and allowed the 5th fewest goals from open play to opponents as well on the season, so they should be more than able to limit Manchester United in this one.
Getting a full-goal headstart looks too good to pass up here and we’re taking Brighton +1 (-133) as the play for Sunday against Manchester United over in the EPL.
Prediction: Brighton +1 (-133)
