Manchester United vs Tottenham Analysis
This is an important match for United to rebound after their embarrassing 4-1 loss to Manchester City last week as the players on the field look like they completely gave up in the second half.
Rangnick has his hands full in trying to bring them together as their chances of finishing top-4 and qualifying for Champions League next year continue to slide. They currently sit just one point back of Arsenal for the fourth spot in the table, but the Gunners have three games in hand on the Red Devils and they continue to win without distractions from European football.
United Looking Ahead?
Speaking of distractions, United has a crucial Champions League game coming up next week against Atletico, which in all honesty, barring a meltdown by Arsenal, is probably their only chance of qualifying for Champions League football next year, by winning the competition. Although they certainly will still push forward in the EPL, you have to believe they are thinking along those same lines.
United has been struggling to get results at home lately as well. They have just three wins in their last seven games in all competitions and just two in their last five EPL matches. They beat Brighton and West Ham during this current stretch but settled for draws against Watford and Southampton while losing to Wolves. Those are not acceptable results for a supposed top-4 side.
Up-and-Down Hotspur
Tottenham have been on an absolute roller coaster since the calendar turned to 2022. They have alternated wins and losses in almost all 14 games this year with the exception of back-to-back losses against Wolves and Southampton. In their last five games alone, they won 5-0 vs Everton, won 4-0 over Leeds and most impressively, even beat Manchester City 3-2. However, in between those wins they lost 0-1 to Burnley and were knocked out of the FA Cup by Championship side Middlesbrough.
At this point, I would say Tottenham have a better chance of finishing Top-4 than United does. Even though they are three points back of Arsenal, with United and West Ham in between, Arsenal only has one game in hand on Tottenham while the Spurs have two in hand on United and the Hammers. Additionally, Tottenham has no further European commitments to worry about and can solely focus on the remainder of the EPL season.
Manchester United vs Tottenham Prediction
By the numbers, not much separates these two teams with very similar xG as well as shots for and shots conceded numbers. However, the scheduling spot is clearly in Tottenham’s favor as United look ahead to Atletico in the Champions League next week.
My favorite trend though for this game is that neither team has swept the season series in the last nine years. They have either split wins or either side won while the other game played out to a draw.
United won the first meeting 3-0 in London despite a much closer xG tally of Tottenham 1.16 – 1.39 United. This time around, I think Tottenham have a good chance to return the favor, but all we need is a draw to cash our ticket. Play Tottenham Double Chance (+0.5) at -130 odds.
