Columbus Crew vs D.C. United | April 6 | 7:30pm ET
Columbus -160 | Draw +310 | D.C. United +370
Asian Handicap: Columbus -0.75 | Total: 3.0
Fading the MLS Cup Champs at home may seem like a fool’s cry, but this is a Champions Cup week, and we know what that means.
MLS teams, even the best ones, are just not deep enough on the roster to be able to handle the volume of games involved in playing every 3-4 days and it shows in the results.
Champions Cup teams are just 8-16 ATS this season following a midweek match and two of those wins came because two Champions Cup teams played one another, so somebody had to win.
By the numbers, Columbus should be the favorite, but I think the price is just a little too high. While they are 4-3-1 on the season including the Champions Cup, they have won just one match by more than one goal.
After their first Champions Cup match, they hosted Chicago on the weekend, and while they did win 2-1, they allowed the Fire 1.90 xGA which is very worrisome for a team laying a full goal. Hard to cover that spread.
For DC, they have had a solid start to the season themselves with just one loss which came at home to Miami. That was also their only loss ATS, where they stand at 5-1 on the season including earning a road draw at Cincinnati, last year’s Supporter’s Shield winners.
But really, this one is all about fading Columbus who expelled a lot of energy in their Champions Cup match as they eked out a 1-1 home draw vs a strong Tigres team.
To make matters a little worse, they also had to play a man down for the final 15 minutes. I just see them coming slow out of the gate and if DC can capitalize early, it will be very difficult for Columbus to cover this number.
We are following the early money on this as the spread opened at -1.0 for the home side. While that has now dropped to -0.75, I suggest paying a little vig to grab the +1.0 head start on DC to give us a little extra cushion.
MLS Prediction: D.C. United +1.0 (-130)
New England Revolution vs Charlotte FC | April 6 | 7:30pm ET
New England +120 | Draw +245 | Charlotte +200
Asian Handicap: New England -0.25 | Total: 2.5
Another Champions Cup team playing here so I think you know where I’m going with this one. But, aside from the schedule in favor of Charlotte, the numbers back this up as well.
New England has only survived this far into the Champions Cup due to a favorable draw facing Independiente and Alajuelense in the first two rounds, avoiding any other MLS or Liga MX teams. Well that ended abruptly on Tuesday as they were smacked 0-4 against Club America at home. Safe to say their Champions Cup run has ended.
In league play, they have been horrible with no wins, one draw and four losses, conceding 11 goals already while allowing 2.06 xGA per match.
They clearly have struggled to show up on the weekend after their midweek matches, losing all four games including at home to Cincinnati and Toronto.
Meanwhile Charlotte has had a solid start to the season. Though their record is a mediocre 2-2-2, they both beat Columbus, though that was red card aided, and earned a draw with Cincinnati, two of the favorites to win the MLS Cup this season.
Defensively is where they have shined as they have held five of their six opponents to one goal or fewer, keeping two clean sheets while allowing two goals just one time, at Nashville. Overall, they are allowing just 0.95 xGA per match, which ranks 4th in the league, and I always like to bet a team with a good defense getting a head start.
So, we have New England on short rest, versus a team that does a great job limiting their opponents and it just seems very likely Charlotte can walk away with a result here.
MLS Prediction: Charlotte FC +0.25 (-115)
Los Angeles FC vs LA Galaxy | April 6 | 7:30pm ET
LAFC -145 | Draw +330 | LA Galaxy +300
Asian Handicap: LAFC -0.75 | Total: 3.25
El Traffico. MLS’s best rivalry always produces a ton of fireworks on the field, and I fully expect this edition to continue that tradition.
While this is clearly not the same LAFC team that won the MLS Cup two seasons ago, they are still a strong offensive team, despite going scoreless over a three-game stretch already this season.
In their other three matches they scored nine goals just to remind you that they can still find the net.
While it’s only been three matches at home, they have averaged 2.60 xG per match including coming off a 5-goal performance in their last match vs Nashville.
Oh, and another reminder, they rank 1st in the league averaging 7.2 shots on target. The #2 team in that statistic? Yea, the other team from LA.
The Galaxy have been just as electric as LAFC, averaging 7.0 shots on target and 1.98 xG per match, the 2nd most in the league.
They remain unbeaten and have scored a total of 13 goals in six matches, including at least one in every match, and they have scored three goals on three separate occasions.
Defensively though the Galaxy seem to have the same problem they have had the last couple of seasons. They are conceding too much to be a real contender.
They have kept just one clean sheet while allowing nine goals in their other five matches, including multiple goals in three of them. All three of their away matches have finished with at least four total goals scored.
But really, when it comes to El Traffico, you can throw so many of the season statistics out the window. No matter how good LAFC has been in recent seasons, the Galaxy, even in their worst years, always give them trouble and always find ways to score. The results back that up.
In 21 all-time matches dating back to 2018 when LAFC entered the league, 12 matches have finished with at least four goals scored, with another four finishing with three goals scored. Only five matches have finished as ‘full losses’ versus this current total set at 3.25.
Another option for this match is to play the combo of Both Teams to Score + Over 2.5 Goals which is priced at -140. That parlay is 16-5 all-time in this series. Either way, expect goals here.
MLS Prediction: Over 3.25 Goals (-110) or Both Teams to Score + Over 2.5 Goals (-140)
