Napoli vs Liverpool Analysis
Liverpool will be hoping to turn their slow start domestically around on Wednesday with a comprehensive first-round victory over Napoli, but things haven’t always come easy for the Reds in this venue. Napoli has held Liverpool scoreless in all three meetings in Italy since 2010.
Napoli, for their part, have started the season well with an undefeated mark on the year. After handing Lazio a loss over the weekend, Napoli looks to mount a serious challenge for the Scudetto this season.
The two sides have met numerous times since 2010, with home advantage always proving key. Liverpool owns a W3, D1, L1 record against Napoli at Anfield, while Napoli owns a W2, D1, L0 record against Liverpool at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Europe May Be A Welcome Respite For The Reds
While Liverpool has struggled domestically this season, winning just two games all year against Bournemouth and Newcastle respectively, they can be almost assured that whatever they do domestically shouldn’t hinder their continental form.
Liverpool has been an absolute juggernaut in Europe in seasons past, reaching three finals over the past five seasons, and are capable of winning this competition even when not at their best domestically. They won the 2004-05 UEFA Champions League despite sitting level on points with Bolton Wanderers to close out that season.
Offense Is Key For Napoli
Napoli has been in red-hot form offensively to start the season in Serie A, banking 12 goals from their opening five matches (2.4 goals per game), and have been even better at home, with the ‘Partenopei’ averaging 2.5 goals per game this season and owning the league’s best overall xG out of any Serie A team as well.
The key to that has been 21-year-old new Georgian signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who has scored four goals to open up the new campaign (second-most in the league), and who scored the winner against Lazio over the weekend as well.
Napoli vs Liverpool Prediction
We’re taking the over 2.75 goals here on Wednesday between Liverpool and Napoli.
While Liverpool has been misfiring to start the season, they’ve nevertheless been extremely active, averaging the EPL’s second highest xG rating this year and ranking No. 1 in total shots per game this year also at a colossal 19.5 shots per game, which is over two full shots more than next-best Arsenal and Manchester City have averaged.
That offensive pressure will start to pay off sooner rather than later for Liverpool and a continental battle against Napoli in Italy on Wednesday may just pave the way for that resurgence.
For their part, Napoli too have been in red-hot goal-scoring form this year, scoring two or more goals in five of their last seven games at home in meaningful competition, and we expect that to continue here on Wednesday also.
Take the over 2.75 goals on Wednesday between Liverpool and Napoli in Champions League.
