Nottingham Forest vs Huddersfield Analysis

This year’s iteration of that famous game at Wembley will see Huddersfield Town, who finished bottom of the Premier League back in the 2018/19 season, take on a former giant of English football Nottingham Forest, a team who hasn’t visited Wembley since all the way back to 1992.

Nottingham Forest has won two of their three meetings against Huddersfield Town this season, twice in the league and once in the FA Cup, but finished two points behind Huddersfield in the Championship table. This should make for an extremely competitive game here on Sunday.

Forest Generating Buzz

Nottingham Forest is grabbing headlines all over the country as the former two time European champions aren’t your usual promotion candidates.

On top of that, Steve Cooper’s job at the club has been immense this season, guiding them from bottom of the league at the start of the season to all the way to the promotion race, culminating in this year’s playoff final.

A lot of that success for Forest has come from an offense that has bagged 50 of their 73 goals this season through open play and counter-attacks, making them an extremely enjoyable team to watch from a casual fan’s perspective.

Huddersfield’s Patient Approach Paid Dividends

While Forest has been a high tempo team this year, the Terriers have been anything but and have been breaking down teams through a combination of both patience and savvy play.

Huddersfield had one of the lowest booking points totals (aggression) in the league this season and despite a low possession rate, have found ways to carve out goals in games, mainly through set pieces.

Huddersfield has the highest set piece goal rate in the league this year, setting up almost a third of all their goals this season through a combination of free-kicks and corners. That’s a phenomenally high rate for any team and it’ll be interesting to see whether Huddersfield can continue to work that magic into Sunday’s final.

Nottingham Forest vs Huddersfield Prediction

This is an extremely tricky game to call on Sunday.

Forest has shown their mettle in big games, beating a solid Sheffield United side on penalties two weeks ago to move into this final and that confidence booster could be key here.

Forest should also have the majority of home support in Wembley as well with most neutrals and the media seemingly on their side because of their storied history and their 20+ year absence from England’s top division.

However, Huddersfield should make it incredibly tough out there for them and they’ll know they won’t want to get in a firefight with Nottingham Forest here so we’re expecting a cagey, cautious game here on Sunday with everything at stake and one that likely finishes under the total as a result.
