Nottingham Forest vs Sheffield United Analysis
A team far too long in the wilderness Nottingham Forest looks to take their first step to returning to the top flight of English football on Tuesday with a playoff semifinal victory over Sheffield United. Forest was in control with a 2-0 lead away from home over the weekend, but a late Sander Berge goal has given new life to Sheffield as they only trail by one heading into the second leg.
The two teams have been pretty much inseparable over recent head-to-head’s, with each side winning one and drawing two over their four most recent encounters.
Blades Look To Put Last Year’s Disappoint Behind
After a fantastic 2019/20 season which saw Sheffield United finish top half in the Premier League, the Blades suffered a monumental collapse last season ranking bottom of the league with 29 defeats from just 38 games.
However, they’ve enjoyed a solid 2021/22 bounce-back campaign in this season’s Championship, allowing the third-fewest shots out of any team in the league this season and winning each of their last three games of the regular season to guarantee themselves a spot in this year’s playoffs.
The Giant Finally Awakens
One of England’s most successful and oldest club teams (two-time European cup winners) Nottingham Forest has given themselves a huge chance of a Premier League return for the first time in over 20 years with that first leg victory in Bramall Lane over Sheffield United and the potential return of a former footballing giant as taken the headlines over in the UK.
The man responsible for that astounding turnaround, current boss Steve Cooper, has done a tremendous job this season, taking over at a City side who were bottom of the league back in September, suffering their worst start to a league campaign in over a century, and has since guided them to an historic playoff spot with potentially more to come also.
Nottingham Forest vs Sheffield United Prediction
Nottingham Forest should have this tie sewn up already, missing numerous chances in that first leg against Sheffield United and allowing that late goal to Sander Berge at the end of the game to give the Blades a lifeline in this one.
Because of that, it’s no surprise to see Forest installed as favorites here, especially at home, where they’ve won seven straight, but all the value looks to lie with Sheffield United here catching a +0.25 head start.
This current Blades squad is full of old veterans, and at this stage of the playoffs, they will be a tough out for a Forest side looking to take that next step into what’s known as the richest 90 minutes in world football next time out against either Luton or Huddersfield.
With that veteran mentality, we’re going to look towards taking Sheffield United to avoid defeat in this one and take them on the +0.25 handicap line to cover on the road on Tuesday over in Nottingham.
