Portugal vs Spain Betting Analysis
Two of the top teams in Group A2 clash on Tuesday as second-place Spain takes on group leaders Portugal over in the Estadio Municipal de Braga in the north of the country.
Portugal has been dominant at home over this campaign so far, securing two victories from two in the group with both by multiple-goal margins.
Spain, for their part, has won two of their last three games overall and are undefeated on the road in this group as well, although they do come off a disappointing 2-1 home loss to Switzerland over the weekend.
Spain’s Possession-Based Football Failing To Pay Off
Spain’s unique brand of patient, possession-based football has been a hallmark of theirs for well over a decade now, but it’s been failing to pay dividends for them in this campaign as they’ve secured just two wins from their five group games.
Spain has dominated possession in this group so far, putting up a 66.9% average (68.2% on the road) with an 89.4% pass accuracy rating to boot also, both of which are No. 1 in the league.
However, manager Luis Enrique’s insistence on not using a dedicated No. 9 striker has made those stats worth little. Portugal has netted almost double the number of goals from open play as Spain has over this campaign so far, despite the disadvantage in possession and passing that the Spanish have enjoyed.
Portugal Continues To Get It Done At Home
It’s now been seven wins from their last eight at home overall for Portugal heading into Tuesday’s matchup and the Selecao have bagged multiple goals in each of those wins as well with their offense continuing to run hot.
Portugal has dominated the offensive stats over this campaign so far, ranking as the only team to register double-digit goals in the group, ranking No. 1 with the highest shots on target (almost double that of Spain yet again), and scoring in 12-straight home games also entering Tuesday’s matchup.
Portugal vs Spain Prediction
The outright draw is always in play between these two international heavyweights and at a healthy price of +225, it could well be worth another look here on Tuesday as well.
Outside of that, the over 2.25 goals looks appealing also in this one.
Luis Enrique seems to have learned his lesson from the game against Switzerland this past weekend, calling it the worst display he’s seen since taking charge of the national team first back in 2018.
Paramount to that is a lack of attacking threat as Spain looked toothless in front of goal on Saturday against Switzerland. That should be addressed here as anything other than a win in this one for Spain would see Portugal move on to the playoffs at the expense of the Spanish in this year’s tournament.
If Spain does end up pushing the offensive button here they should be punished at the other end by a Portugal side that has been absolutely ruthless in attack over the last few years and we expect both teams to find the back of the net in this one.
Recent trends point towards the draw being good value once again at +225, but our main play in this one will focus on the over 2.25 goals on Tuesday between Spain and Portugal in Braga.
