Premier League 2024-25 Preview: Winner
After three thrilling title races that have seen both Liverpool and Arsenal push current holders Manchester City all the way across recent seasons, is this the year we finally see the Cityzens get dethroned after picking up six of the last seven English Premier League titles? We would argue not so fast.
Manchester City were arguably there for the taking last season with assist leader Kevin de Bruyne missing for half of the season with an ankle injury, playmaker Rodri missing a number of key games also, as well as striker Erling Haaland being off the pace for most of the season too, registering nine fewer goals than what he managed in his maiden season, Arsenal will no doubt be rueing what could have been last season.
The Gunners remain Manchester City’s main title threat for this year, and have bolstered their squad ahead of a fresh title challenge, bringing in the likes of Spanish goalkeeper David Raya on a permanent deal, highly-rated defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna, and seem very close to adding experienced midfielder Mikel Merino at the time of writing also.
That said, Arsenal were already the #1 defensive team in the league last season, and it was mainly in attack where they struggled to match Manchester City, an area where they’ve added very little so far over this transfer window.
City scored a whopping 67 goals from open play last season, a full 18 goals more than what Arsenal managed, with 30 of the Gunners total goals coming from set-pieces or penalties as well.
In fact, only Chelsea had more penalties awarded to them in the EPL last season than Arsenal had, and if the Gunners are going to finally wrest the title away from City this season, they’re going to have to find a way to consistently get goals from open play.
The Gunners have improved their total points tally in the league across each of the past four seasons, but given Manchester City appears almost back to full strength before the start of the new season, Arsenal doing little to bolster their already thin attack in the transfer window, plus the experience edge that City has over Arsenal in terms of getting over the line in title races, we’re backing the Cityzens to once again lift the title in 2024/25.
Premier League 2024-25 Winner Prediction: Manchester City (+150)
Premier League 2024-25 Preview: Top Goalscorer
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has won both of the recent EPL Golden Boot awards since he entered the league two seasons ago from German club Borussia Dortmund.
It’s therefore no surprise to see the big Norweigian go in as the clear odds-on favorite to lift this season’s crown as well, especially as he enjoyed a five goal cushion over next-best Cole Palmer last season.
However, there’s no denying that Haaland didn’t look as electric as he did in his first season, with de Bruyne’s early season injury likely hampering Haaland in terms of connect play from the midfield, looking at times completely isolated in games, and subsequently scoring nine fewer goals than what he managed in 2022/23.
Haaland is also starting this season off with a couple of muscular issues as well team reports have confirmed, and that isn’t exactly the type of news that has you running to the window to bet big on an odds-on favorite.
In our view, one particular player stands out amongst the rest as having some real value in the top goalscorer market this season, and that’s Newcastle’s Alexander Isak.
Isak finished with the third most goals in the Premier League last season, that despite playing the fewest games and having the fewest minutes out of any of the top ten players in the scoring charts.
In fact, Isak played almost a thousand minutes fewer than what another favorite in this market, Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, played, but that will likely correct itself this year as Callum Wilson continues to struggle with injuries, out for the start of the season once again, likely leading to Isak becoming Newcastle’s sole top target man moving forward.
With Newcastle out of the Champions League this year, something their thin squad struggled to deal with last season, plus Isak generating 0.84 goals per game last season, second only behind Erling Haaland, the value definitely lies with the Swedish striker taking the top spot ahead of this season.
Premier League 2024-25 Top Goalscorer Prediction: Alexander Isak (+1600)
Premier League 2024-25 Preview: Relegation
In what’s always a fun market to bet, last season saw all three of the newly promoted teams from the Championship go right back down for only the second time in 25 years.
Will that be the case once again this season with Leicester, Ipswich, and Southampton all favorites to go down once again, or can at least one of those teams survive and become a permanent mainstay in the Premier League moving forward?
For Leicester and Southampton, the jump up to the EPL will likely be minimal as they’ve both operated at this level in recent seasons, but for Ipswich, who have suffered a 22-year exodus from the Premier League, it’s no doubt a much bigger deal, just as it was for Luton Town last year.
That said, Ipswich were highly impressive in the Championship last season, finishing just a point shy of first-placed Leicester, and unlike Leicester, won’t have to deal with a massive points deduction to start this season due to breaching profit and sustainability rules.
That imminent deduction leaves Leicester as the firm favorites to get relegated this season despite their impressive Championship campaign, with Ipswich going in as second-favorites.
However, Ipswich finished nine points above the other promoted team Southampton last season, with the Saints needing to come through the playoff route in order to gain promotion, so it’s a little puzzling to see Ipswich being priced up above Southampton to go down this season.
Both teams had two of the most prolific offenses in the entire Championship last season, notching 92 goals (Ipswich – 1st), and 87 goals (Southampton – 3rd) respectively last year.
However, in terms of defense, Ipswich were significantly better than Southampton, giving up just 37 goals from open play compared to Southampton’s 50, which was the 3rd highest mark in the entire league.
Take the bigger price with Southampton to go down this season.
Premier League 2024-25 Relegation Prediction: Southampton (+125)
