Premier League Outright Winner
It’s no surprise to see the current champions Manchester City go in as odds-on favorites to repeat their triumph once again this season as they look to lift their sixth title over the last seven years.
That said, the gap has closed somewhat from last season, with their main title challengers in 2022/23, Arsenal, getting even stronger in the off-season
They brought in big names such as Jurrien Timber, Kai Havertz, and most notably Declan Rice into their lineup, with returning loanees such as Folarin Balogun also adding some much-needed depth to the Gunners squad.
However, Arsenal will likely need to be stronger as while they did lead the title race for much of last season, it was Manchester City who dominated the underlying stats (+10.51 xPTS over Arsenal on the season).
Only Fulham noticed a bigger overall discrepancy in their expected numbers to actual numbers last season than Arsenal did.
Manchester City will likely rue the experience loss of big game players such as Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez this season, both of whom departed the club over the summer and had a massive 624 Premier League appearances between them.
Gundogan especially was instrumental in leading Manchester City’s title charge last season, grabbing four goals and an assist to come out as the Sky Blues star performer over the final month of the season, and will no doubt remain a key loss for Manchester City ahead of this year.
On top of that, Manchester City were one of the most fortunate teams in all of Europe last season as well in regards to their injury crisis, with only Brighton’s players missing fewer overall games than City’s 49 up to the midpoint of March last season.
Meanwhile, Manchester City’s main title challengers in terms of odds prior to the start of last season, Liverpool and Chelsea, had their rosters absolutely decimated last year, losing out on a combined 286 games between them over that same timeframe, by far the most out of any team in the league.
With Arsenal coming out on top in the recent Community Shield game, the Gunners have already drawn first blood on the season, and their upgraded roster should provide another stern test to the Sky Blues ahead of this year’s campaign also.
That said, Manchester City continue to be the dominant force in Europe currently and we’re backing them to lift yet another Premier League crown in 2023/24.
Premier League Outright Winner Prediction: Manchester City (-125)
Premier League Relegation Prediction
Former Premier League stalwarts Burnley returned to the top tier of English football with ease last season, racking up almost 20 points more than similarly promoted Luton Town as Vincent Kompany’s men made short work of their single-season Championship campaign.
With how impressive Burnley looked last year, averaging a colossal 2.13 GPG at home, the books have put them noticeably outside the bottom bracket of teams to get relegated this season, with similarly newly-promoted Sheffield United and Luton Town being installed as the two heavy favorites to go down this season.
With Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Wolves, and Everton all favored to go down ahead of Burnley this season, it ranks as one of the more open relegation markets in the EPL in quite some time.
Wolves and Everton provide the best value out of those teams in our opinion as the Toffees have added relatively little in the summer after a season in which they barely survived, while Wolves could arguably face even greater issues ahead of the new season.
Wolves were sitting rock-bottom of the table back on December 1st of last year with just two wins generated from fifteen games, a record which led to the dismissal of former coach Bruno Lage just weeks prior, before they were eventually rescued by former Europa League winner Julen Lopetegui as he took charge of the club late last year.
However, while Lopetegui may have got them out of immediate trouble, that new manager bounce was short-lived for Wolves as no team in the Premier League recorded fewer expected points over the back half of the season than Wolves managed
To compound matters even further, Lopetegui may not even be in charge of the club for the first game of the season as reports claim he is deeply unhappy with the board’s dealings over the summer, especially in the number of players leaving the Molineux with relatively little coming back.
Current reports suggest former Bournemouth manager Gary O’Neil could be the one to step in if Lopetegui does decide to leave the club in the very near future.
Whether Julen Lopetegui remains in charge of Wolves or not, 2023/24 is set to be an extremely challenging season for the West Midlands club and one they likely fall short of surviving in.
Premier League Relegation Prediction: Wolves (+300)
Premier League Top Four Prediction
The job former Sassuolo manager Roberto De Zerbi has done since coming in as Brighton’s head coach last September has been nothing short of exceptional.
Since his first full month in charge of the club, only Newcastle and Manchester City had a higher expected goals and expected points tally on the season than Brighton managed, and the Seagulls only got stronger as the year went on.
From January 1st, Brighton owned the best xG tally in the entire league, and sat behind only eventual champions Manchester City in terms of expected points also, a very strong momentum shift that should see them in good stead ahead of this season as well.
While it’s not all positive news for the Seagulls ahead of the 2023/24 season, especially with highly talented midfielder Moises Caicedo expected to leave in the very near future, there are enough positive signs.
With the talent of forward players such as Evan Ferguson and Joao Pedro Brighton will be able to navigate any absences in their roster as they look to put together yet another highly impressive season in the Premier League.
While Pep Guardiola may have won Manager of the Year last season given his spectacular treble triumph, what Roberto De Zerbi has managed to do at Brighton should definitely be in the conversation also, and at current odds of +400 for a top-four spot for the Seagulls this season, we like the value on Brighton to lock in a Champions League place in 2023/24.
Premier League Top Four Prediction: Brighton (+400)
