PSV Eindhoven vs Monaco Analysis
It’s all to play for in the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven on Tuesday night as Monaco and PSV square off for their all-important second leg after a 1-1 draw in Stade Louis II last week.
New Monaco signing Takumi Minamino proved a handful early for the visitors, getting himself in dangerous areas for the home side, but PSV were the ones to strike first, netting just before the half from a Joey Veerman strike to make it 1-0.
Philippe Clement’s side poured it on in attack to start the second half but Ruud van Nistelrooy’s men proved up to the task, containing a lot of what Monaco were offering going forward while constantly providing an attacking threat on the counter themselves.
Monaco finally got the equalizer they wanted ten minutes from time when defender Alex Disasi was able to pounce on a loose ball from a free kick, setting up a fantastic all-to-play for clash in the Netherlands on Tuesday.
There has been little to separate either team over the last few seasons, with three of the last four head-to-heads between the two sides ending in outright draws.
Monaco’s Recent European Road Record Is Concerning
After an historic 2016-17 Champions League campaign which saw Monaco go all the way to the semi-finals, Monaco’s European record since then, especially on the road, has been fairly dismal.
‘Les Monegasques’ have won just two road games in European competition over their last thirteen matches overall, but will no doubt hope they have the equalizer on Tuesday in a rested Wissam Ben Yedder who’s netted 14 times over his last 21 Champions League appearances.
French Sides Have Enjoyed Historic Success Against PSV
While new manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has no doubt got his PSV campaign off to a flying start, winning the Dutch Super Cup as he did against Ajax just over a week ago, almost winning outright in France against Monaco last week as well and blitzing past Emmen at the weekend in a 4-1 rout, history has nonetheless not been kind to PSV when facing French competition in Europe.
PSV have won just three of their last thirteen games against French opposition in Europe and just nine of their previous thirty-five prior to that also, so the Dutch side will no doubt be eager to overcome that historical record in this one.
PSV Eindhoven vs Monaco Prediction
Monaco will no doubt be pleased by the way they closed out the end of leg 1 last week and should be high on confidence after a routine win at the weekend against Strasbourg also in which they got the chance to rest a few key players.
Because of that, we like the value on Monaco +0.25 in this one to avoid defeat and potentially win the game outright, just as they did last season with a 2-1 victory in Philips Stadion in the Europa League, and Monaco showed just how threatening they are in front of goal last week, owning a 51-22 dangerous attack advantage over PSV in that first leg.
Take Monaco +0.25 against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday in Champions League qualifying.
