Serie A Power Rankings For Matchday 32
Serie A Power Rankings Top 5
As we head towards the home stretch of the Serie A regular season, Sportsmemo Serie A handicapper Nick Borrman presents his Serie A Power Rankings heading into matchday 32. Which teams are slotted at the top and which are headed towards relegation? Read his power rankings now!
1. Napoli
#1 Last Week | L/5 Form – Tied 2nd [10 pts] | L/5 xPTS – 4th [8.04 xPTS]
OK, back to business for Napoli. Now that they have been eliminated from the Champions League, there is only one thing left to do.
They could win the Scudetto this weekend which seems even more likely as Lazio travel to Inter. This one has been 33 years in the making.
2. Inter
#5 Last Week | L/5 Form – Tied 17th [4 pts] | L/5 xPTS – 1st [10.98 xPTS]
Considering the teams I had listed in spots #2-4 last week all lost (Lazio, Roma and Juventus) it only seems fitting for Inter to jump them all into 2nd place.
While they only have four points in their last five matches, they lead the league in expected points over that span and finally converted their chances beating Empoli 3-0. Oh, and let’s not forget they are in the Champions League semifinals.
3. Lazio
#2 Last Week | L/5 Form – 1st [12 pts] | L/5 xPTS – 8th [6.53 xPTS]
I warned last week that there could be a downslide coming. They have been overperforming their xG all season to the tune of earning 14.5 more points than expected.
With a date at Inter Milan this weekend, it’s possible they fall outside of the Top-5 all together and worse, lose their firm grip on a Champions League spot.
4. AC Milan
N/R Last Week | L/5 Form – Tied 8th [8 pts] | L/5 xPTS – 3rd [9.29 xPTS]
Fresh off a solid 2-0 home win over Lecce, AC Milan have put themselves back into the Top-4. Like the other Milan side, their Serie A form hasn’t been great recently.
Maybe they were too busy reaching the Champions League semifinals. Either way, it was an important three points in the race to secure Champions League football next year.
5. Roma
#3 Last Week | L/5 Form – Tied 4th [9 pts] | L/5 xPTS – 2nd [10.66 xPTS]
They lost at Atalanta on Monday, but I’ll give them a pass after playing extra time just four days prior, knocking out Feyenoord to reach the Europa League semifinals.
Their next three league matches are brutal though, facing both Milans and a surprisingly hot Monza side. They could realistically be looking at the Europa League as their only path to Champions League football next season.
Serie A Bottom 5 Power Rankings
16. Salernitana
#18 Last Week | L/5 Form – Tied 9th [7 pts] | L/5 xPTS – 17th [5.20 xPTS]
The streak is over! Salernitana emphatically end their six-match draw streak with a 3-0 win over Sassuolo moving them seven points clear of the relegation line.
If it wasn’t for the fact that they have allowed the most xGA in the league at 1.93 per 90 minutes, they would probably be off this list, so I’ll keep them here for now.
17. Empoli
N/R Last Week | L/5 Form – Tied 17th [4 pts] | L/5 xPTS – 18th [5.17 xPTS]
Thanks to Verona’s win over Bologna, Empoli replace them in the bottom five after their 0-3 home loss to Inter. Losing to Inter isn’t necessarily a bad thing but winning just once over your last 12 matches is.
They have also been held scoreless in three straight. However, thanks to a ridiculous overperformance of xG, they are safely above the relegation zone.
18. Spezia
#17 Last Week | L/5 Form – Tied 19th [3 pts] | L/5 xPTS – 15th [5.77 xPTS]
The good news is Spezia earned a draw. The bad news is it came against the worst team in the league.
With Verona’s win, they now sit just one point above the relegation line. They have two very winnable matches in their next three to try an stay above a surging Verona side.
19. Sampodira
#20 Last Week | L/5 Form – Tied 15th [5 pts] | L/5 xPTS – 16th [5.27 xPTS]
Sampdoria earned a point! But considering it came against the very team they are chasing on the outside of the relegation line, it’s only delaying the inevitable. But hey, maybe they are better than Cremonese?!
20. Cremonese
#19 Last Week | L/5 Form – Tied 9th [7 pts] | L/5 xPTS – 20th [4.28 xPTS]
There’s really no difference between #19 and #20, but with their 0-3 loss combined with Sampdoria’s 1-1 draw, I’ll make the flip-flop. Cremonese have the least xP in the league this season (26.58) and now eight points back with seven matches to go, things are looking bleak.
