Strasbourg vs Clermont Analysis
Clermont Foot will hope it’s third time lucky for them here on Sunday as they enter into the Stade de la Meinau this weekend coming off back-to-back road defeats.
Those defeats for Clermont, however, did come against two top-five teams in Marseille and Lorient respectively, and both by the minimum margin also. So Clermont likely won’t be too disheartened by those results.
Strasbourg, meanwhile, are in some pretty deep water themselves this season sitting 18th in the table down in the relegation spots and have yet to win a game all season, one of only three teams in French Ligue One yet to do so.
Strasbourg has a strong head-to-head record in this venue against Clermont over recent seasons, losing just one of their last five against them at home.
Offensive Issues Remain For Clermont
Despite averaging more than one goal a game this season in French Ligue One, the underlying data tells a much bleaker story for Clermont on offense this year.
The Lancers own the league’s lowest offensive xG numbers this season with a 3.42 differential between their actual vs. expected numbers.
Only two teams in the league have a bigger differential than Clermont’s offense this season, so that gap will likely catch up to them sooner rather than later.
A Return Home May Be Beneficial For Strasbourg
A return to La Meinau may provide Strasbourg with a boost this weekend as, despite their poor start to the season overall, they’ve still only managed to lose one league game in this venue over their last 12 league starts.
That loss came in their league opener against one of the league’s best, Monaco, so Strasbourg can take heart from the fact they’ve been extremely resilient at home over recent games.
Strasbourg vs Clermont Prediction
Strasbourg showed their battling quality in a 1-1 draw against Brest last weekend, going down to ten men early and still seeing out a draw. We predict a similar type of performance in this one against Clermont on Sunday.
In terms of offense, both of these teams rank bottom-five in the league in overall shots per game, but Strasbourg does have a competent defense at least, ranking as the seventh-best team in the league on overall defensive xGA this season.
