Wales vs Austria Analysis

Austria will no doubt be feeling somewhat fortunate ahead of this clash against Wales in Cardiff on Thursday as they finished fourth overall in their group behind Israel, Scotland and Denmark, but find themselves through to the playoff round based on the merits of their UEFA Nations League standing.

Wales, meanwhile, has lost just once over their entire World Cup qualifying campaign, that coming via a 3-1 road loss to No. 1-ranked side Belgium in a game the Welsh actually took the lead in, so they’ll no doubt be confident ahead of this clash on Thursday.

Austria Looking to Overturn 24-Year Heartbreak

With their first appearance in a World Cup tournament in over 24 years tantalizingly close Austria, despite their disappointing qualifying campaign overall, may well use that extra pressure to give them the necessary motivation to put in a career best performance here on Thursday.

The Austrians shouldn’t be underestimated either as despite their lowly fourth-place ranking in the group stage, they’ve won three of their last four internationals outright and have a serious dangerman up front in the form of Marko Arnautovic who averaged the third-most goals out of any player in Group F.

Dragons Look to Soar in 2022

For as long as a 24 year wait that it’s been for Austria to qualify for a World Cup Finals, it’s been an even longer one for this Welsh faithful.

The Dragons last appeared in a World Cup Finals competition all the way back in 1958 and will be eager to deliver a long awaited return to that competition in front of a packed home support in Cardiff on Thursday.

The Welsh have every right to feel confident ahead of this tie as well as they’ve gone undefeated across their last 16 home matches in all, their longest run in national history, and will look to stop Austria from spoiling that on Thursday.

Wales vs Austria Prediction

With the line set at pick ‘em right now shaded slightly towards Austria, it’s difficult to look past getting Wales onside here at plus money.

The Welsh have been incredibly strong at home over the last couple of years where some excellent teams have failed to come away with a win in Cardiff, notably Croatia, USA and Belgium as head coach Robert Page has Wales incredibly well drilled at the back and has the team playing much more than the sum of their individual parts.

Wales allowed just two goals at home over the entire qualifying group stage, once to Belgium and another consolation goal against Belarus in a 5-1 rout.

With that type of defensive intensity coupled with what should be an electric atmosphere over in Wales in their hunt for a 64 year return to the top table of soccer, we like the Welsh on the draw no bet line here on Thursday to get a positive result against Austria at home and qualify for the finals proper in November.
