Wales vs Netherlands Analysis
Wales is coming off a massive win on Sunday to send their team through to their first World Cup finals appearance since 1958, an incredible 64 year wait, with Welsh star Gareth Bale hailing it as the greatest result in their history.
Netherlands, meanwhile, had no such concerns as they’ve already qualified for this year’s World Cup with a top-of-the-table automatic placement late last year, and has since followed that up with a win on Friday night against lowlands rivals Belgium via a 4-1 demolition with Memphis Depay scoring a brace for the Dutch in that one as well.
The Netherlands have an incredible 8-0 record against Wales in international competition, and Wales will be hoping to snap that here in Cardiff on Wednesday.
Dutch Hoping To Capitalize On Welsh Hangover
It’s fair to say most Welsh fans weren’t even alive the last time Wales reached the World Cup finals, so Sunday’s party in Cardiff went into overdrive with the entire city out in force in a huge show of celebration.
Gareth Bale’s bar in the city center held most of the festivities with Aaron Ramsey and Mark Harris in particular getting into the mood by dancing along to Shakira on top of a bar table.
The Netherlands will no doubt be hoping Wales show up to this game with a serious hangover after the weekend’s festivities and make it two wins from two to open up this group stage.
Hennessy An Absolute Wall In Nets For Wales
It’s fair to say Sunday’s incredible result for Wales rested on the performance of one man, and that was Welsh keeper Wayne Hennessy who was an absolute wall in the net for Wales on Sunday night.
Ukraine kept pouring it on in that game with 24 shots total, and a massive nine on target as well, the highest tally out of any team over the entire World Cup qualifying process without scoring a single goal, as Hennessy was simply in magnificent form.
However, Wales face a much stiffer test here on Wednesday night against a Netherlands team in red-hot form right now, so Hennessy’s heroics will no doubt be needed once again if Wales are to get a result from this game.
Wales vs Netherlands Prediction
Wales has an incredible record at home, not losing here since all the way back in 2018, but Sunday’s celebrations simply can’t be ignored and that euphoric hangover from qualifying for their first World Cup in over 64 years likely carries over to this game as well.
The Netherlands similarly are unbeaten under Louis van Gaal since he took charge after last summer’s Euro tournament, with the Netherlands winning seven of their last nine outright, including that impressive destruction of the world’s No. 2-ranked side, Belgium, on Friday.
With more time to prepare and facing a Welsh team likely not at their best ahead of this one, we expect the Netherlands to win outright on Wednesday over in the Nations League in Cardiff.
