West Ham vs Viborg Analysis
Last season’s Europa League semifinalists West Ham currently sit 19th in the Premier League with zero points and a -3 goal differential, but could arguably consider themselves somewhat unfortunate against Nottingham Forest over the weekend as they did everything but score in that one.
Viborg, meanwhile, hasn’t been the best of travelers, losing both of their two road matches over in the Danish Superliga, but have won both of their recent European road games against Suduva and Torshavn respectively.
The two sides have never met in European competition prior to this point.
Viborg Ready For Thursday
After securing a two-goal lead after just 22 minutes in Sunday’s matchup against Silkeborg, Viborg’s manager Jacob Friis was quick to rest his key players ahead of Thursday’s huge clash against West Ham.
Viborg will also know momentum could be crucial here as they come off back-to-back wins in European qualification while West Ham enter into what will be their first European game of the season.
West Ham Must Live Up To Giants Tag
With a market value and a genuine European presence that absolutely dwarfs their Danish rivals here on Thursday (in the region of $368 million compared to just $8 million), all the pressure will be on West Ham to deliver here and get a positive result at home, especially coming off successive defeats.
However, it wouldn’t be the first time West Ham has failed to live up to the favorites tag as they were surprisingly dumped out of the Europa League back in 2015-16 and again in 2016-17 qualification by the exact same team in Romanian minnows, Astra Giurgiu.
West Ham vs Viborg Prediction
At a current goal spread line of -1.75 for West Ham, there isn’t a whole lot of value in backing the English side in this one, in my opinion, as they would need to win by three clear goals in order to cash a full ticket.
A better angle to approach this game is the total with both teams likely to set up fairly cautiously in this one.
Viborg certainly won’t be coming here to play offensive football on Thursday, and the Danish side has already shown their defensive prowess both domestically and in Europe, allowing just one goal across their last two European games and shutting out Silkeborg over the weekend also.
West Ham, meanwhile, just needs to get out of this one with a win as David Moyes looks to target this competition as a potential piece of silverware for later in the season, and doesn’t want to deal with a potential banana skin here, especially with a tricky matchup against Brighton coming up this weekend.
Take the under 3 goals in London on Thursday between Viborg and West Ham over in the Europa Conference League.
