Detroit Pistons at Memphis Grizzlies Analysis

The Memphis Grizzlies will be looking for a 7th consecutive victory when they host the Detroit Pistons at FedEx Forum on Thursday night. The Grizzlies won a 110-106 thriller over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday night for their 6th straight win. Meanwhile the Pistons got boat raced in Charlotte last night, as they lost 140-111 in a game they never had a chance in. This will be the first of two meetings between these teams who will meet again next month.

Grizzlies Look to Stay Hot

The Memphis Grizzlies have been on a tear as they have won 6 straight as well as 11 of their last 14 games. After the victory over Cleveland the Grizz are now sitting at 4th place in the Western Conference with a 25-14 record. Ja Morant led the way once again with 26 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals, the second steal leading to a game clinching layup. Over the last 5 games Morant have averaged 33.2 points, 5.6 assists and 6.2 rebounds a game while shooting 55% from the field. The Grizz are 5th in the league in scoring with over 111 points a game. On defense they ranked 18th with 108 points allowed a game.

Porous Pistons

The Detroit Pistons are coming off a horrendous performance where they were outscored 37-19 in the first quarter and gave up 75 points in the second half before ultimately allowing a total of 140 points. Prior to that loss they did show a little life, as they had won their prior two games. Detroit got some reinforcements back in the form of Cade Cunningham who missed a little over a week on the health and safety protocol list. He’s scored 16 & 17 in his first two games back in action. Tonight the Pistons will be without the services of Isaiah Stewart and Cory Joseph who are dealing with Covid conditioning issues. The Pistons defense is lackluster as they rank 23rd with over 111 points allowed per game. They actually rank even worse on offensive as they score the 2nd least amount of points a game.

Detroit Pistons at Memphis Grizzlies Prediction

The Memphis Grizzlies are huge favorites of 12.5 points with a total set at 220. You can’t step in front of this Memphis Grizzlies train right now, but 12.5 is a boatload of points to cover. The Grizz have been on fire as they have scored 110 or more in 5 of their last 6 games. Meanwhile the Pistons have allowed 115 points or more in 4 of their last 6 games. In two of those games the Pistons got run out of the gym and allowed 140 to Charlotte and 144 to San Antonio. The Pistons are allow over 112 points a game on the road. I’m going to roll with Memphis in the form of a team total over in this contest. The Grizzlies have been a bear recently, without Stewart to clog up the paint Memphis should be able to score at will. The Grizz average the most points in the paint in the league. The Pistons may play uninspired defense being on the second game of a back-to-back. Our official play will the Grizzlies team total over 116.5.

OFFICIAL PLAY: Memphis Grizzlies Team Total OVER 116.5

Detroit Pistons at Memphis Grizzlies Preview from GoldSheet

Well we were a game late with the Pistons, expecting the heady nectar of Saturday’s OT win over the Spurs to have the same carryover effect as the previous five Detroit wins during the season…all followed by SU and spread losses. Except the Pistons, buoyed by a caravan of players coming out of health protocols, snapped a 16-game losing streak to the Bucks on Monday. The air waited to come put of the balloon until last night in Charlotte, and it hissed all evening in a 140-111 Hornets romp, when Charlotte had clear looks all night from the perimeter and banged home a franchise-record 24 (!) triples. Even with the recent returnees, Detroit still not close to full strength, with top scorer Jerami Grant (20.1 ppg), Kelly Olynyk, and Frank Jackson all remaining with traditional (thumb, knee, ankle…not Covid!) injuries, and remember this team had lost 18 of 19 before Saturday’s win over the Spurs. Pistons backers would have to count upon the Grizzlies going flat like the Bucks did on Monday, but no indication lately that might be forthcoming from Memphis, on a 6-game surge with wins over the Suns, Lakers, Nets, and Cavs in that stretch. Moreover, lately Ja Morant has been as good as the dry-rub ribs at The Rendezvous down the street, while Memphis continues to play inspired on the stop end since Morant’s return to active duty a few weeks ago (a carryover from his absence when Taylor Jenkins got his troops to focus on D out of necessity), ranking a very-respectable tenth defensively since.
