The matchup between the two best players in the world, Messi and Mbappe. The defending World Cup champs France and mighty Argentina.
Qatar and the soccer world could not have asked for a better final, as exciting and admirable as both Croatia and Morocco were. So, what’s going to happen? And what do I predict? Let’s take a few stabs at it.

Argentina vs France Prediction: How’s The World Cup Going For Both? Any Weaknesses?
Obviously the World Cup is going great. That said, has either team been utterly dominant? Not really.
Argentina peaked against Croatia – and peaking in the semifinals is a pretty good time. Before that, they looked pretty commanding against Poland and Mexico, had a scare briefly against Australia, and lost to Saudi Arabia! They also *nearly* got Weghorsted against Holland in the quarterfinals, winning in penalties. So, at times they’ve looked wonderful, other times average.
If Argentina has a weakness, Weghorst and Holland showed it – which is how well they can defend against a big body. France has a Giroud – who had a terrible game against Morocco and surely will be seeking to make amends. Argentina’s central defense work against Giroud could very well determine the outcome of the final. Argentina’s other cause for concern might be their lack of finishing edge – they’ve left plenty of should-be goals on the table.
France, on the other hand, well, maybe it’s the same hand. They looked indomitable against Australia and Poland, winning both handily, looked decent against Denmark, looked intelligent and mature in slipping past a solid Morocco team in the semifinals. But, they also LOST to Tunisia (highlighting questions about depth) and barely squeaked past England – in a game they were often outplayed in.
If France has two areas of concern, one would be… well, are they all going to get sick before the game? Respiratory viruses running rampant in the French camp are a cause for serious dismay if they keep players out.
The other cause for concern for France is their tendency to drift aimlessly at times during games in this tournament. France can shift from incisive, fast attacking to doing.. well, not a whole lot of anything with the ball for stretches at a time. It’s not entirely clear why, but France’s full attacking prowess has not been shown yet.
Argentina vs France Prediction: Can Anyone Score?
Yes, but it’s not going to be easy. It’s not entirely clear how either team breaks down the other team’s defense.
France has an advantage offensively in that they have a beastly striker in Giroud who can use his size and aerial menace, as well as no shortage of skill, to torture Argentina’s center backs.
France also has darting skilled players in Griezmann, Dembele, Hernandez, etc etc.
Argentina has an advantage in having an incredibly resolute defense and stealthy meets powerful meets ingenius players in Alvarez, Mac Allister, and Di Maria.
So, where does this end up? Does all the skill cancel each other out?
Typically, yes. But not when you have two wizards on the field. Messi and Mbappe magic will not only be expected, but likely required, in order for goals to be scored.
And guess what? It’ll happen. Both will strut their stuff and commit feats of inhuman dribbling and passing and shooting… and goals will occur.
Argentina vs France Predictions: The Betting Picks
This has not been an easy World Cup to predict. On paper, this game should be easier than most other games to date. One *should* be expecting a tight, defensive struggle, with both teams being organized and technically skilled, but also not particularly good at scoring goals against each other.
So, we’ll stick with that narrative, and make some varied picks – one moneyline pick, one team prop, and two player props.
Argentina vs France Prediction #1: The Moneyline Winner!
Oof. This is tricky. Two superb teams stocked with world-class players and each in possession of a magician.
Messi and Mbappe, what a pleasure to watch these two veritable geniuses square off and lead their teams. Surround them with infinite talent and you have a can’t miss game.
However, in the end, I think France simply has too much – they’re just too good of finishers and while I don’t expect France to have consistent joy offensively, the weapons they have at their disposal are a bit too much for anyone to handle. I expect Mbappe and Giroud to lead the way and drop Argentina to another heartbreaking World Cup Final defeat.

Argentina vs France Prediction #2: The Score Prediction!
While, I don’t expect a lot of goals, if any, in the first half, I expect a few in the 2nd half and (gulp) possibly extra time. With my pick of France winning, I suppose I should probably have them on top in the score prediction, right?

Argentina vs France Prediction #3: The Player Prop!
Messi is the best player in the world. Coming in to the World Cup, I had him pegged behind Mbappe. I was wrong. I fully expect Messi to win the Golden Ball and probably the Golden Boot as well.
He’s been magical this World Cup, an absolute joy to watch. Now, will he score on Sunday? I don’t know, but I’m not willing to make that bet. I am, however, willing to make a bet on his shots on goal.
