These two teams are very similar in many aspects.  Both had horrible defenses last season and hired new defensive coordinators to turn things around on that side of the ball.  LSU hired Blake Baker from Missouri and made him the highest-paid coordinator in college football.  USC brought in D'Anton Lynn from crosstown rival UCLA after seeing Lynn transform UCLA's defense from an awful group into one of the best run-stopping units in the nation.

Both teams are also replacing Heisman-quality QBs.  For LSU, Jayden Daniels is out and Garrett Nussmeier is in.  At USC, Miller Moss, who had a tremendous bowl game showing and a strong spring, replaces Caleb Williams.

In games like this between two teams close in on-field talent, it often comes down to coaching.  In that regard, I trust USC's Lincoln Riley (6-1 ATS in his career when catching more than 3 points, and 12-0 SU in the first six games of the season with USC) a whole lot more than LSU's Brian Kelly, who was out-coached by Florida State's Mike Norvell in each of the last three season openers.
