Last season's CFB National Football Champions Michigan return to action on Saturday taking on a retooled Fresno State team over in Ann Arbor.

A significant part of Michigan's march to the National Title last season was their defense, which not only allowed a paltry 10.4 PPG to opponents on the season as a whole (with an even lower 9.6 PPG at home also), but just 3.7 YPP across last season's playoffs as well, both the #1 marks in the entire country.

The good news for Michigan is that the vast majority of their returning All-Big Ten performers come on the defensive end for them ahead of this season, so they'll likely start this year as they finished off 2023, namely in dominant fashion.

However, their offense has been vastly transformed, with just two returning starters from the 2023 season, along with first year offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell taking the reins also.

Fresno State meanwhile, despite having an interim head coach in Tim Skipper, has the entirety of its defensive staff fully intact for the third year in a row, and that's a massive plus for them ahead of the new season.

The Bulldogs were extremely tight on defense across the middle part of last season, allowing an average of just 10.8 PPG between Weeks 3-6 of last year, and got back on track in last season's New Mexico Bowl also, holding New Mexico State to just 3.1 YPP on average, the 5th best mark in the entire country.

With both teams primarily focusing on defense here, and both having new cogs to fit into a revamped offensive system, we see this one being a lower scoring game on Saturday.
