Analysis

Virginia Tech opens their season in Nashville against Vanderbilt. I love this Hokies offense and quarterback Kyron Drones who amassed over 2,900 total yards, with more than 2,000 as a passer and over 800 as a runner last season, starting 11 games. Drones accounted for 22 total touchdowns and only threw three interceptions. The Hokies also return all 11 starters on offense this season. The Vanderbilt defense last season was one of the worst in the country. Their run defense as bottom 30 allowing 175 yards rushing per game. Their pass defense was 126th out of 130 teams giving up almost 280 passing yards per game. The Commodores allowed over 36 points per game last year, which was bottom five in the nation. Vanderbilt returns six starters on defense and head coach Clark Lea is now calling plays. That's not enough for me to think they can slow down Drones and leading rusher Bhayshul Tuten, who had five yards per carry and 10 scores last season. Normally, I'd give pause on the road for the Hokies, but Vanderbilt has no real home field advantage. FirstBank Stadium remains a construction site. The portable video board hanging from a crane is gone with the north end zone expected to be ready and open for this game. The south end zone will not be open until the 2025 season. With any luck, the Vanderbilt offense will score and keep pushing the pace for the Hokies.
