4% Texas-San Antonio @ Texas State

Similar offensive performances by these highly potent teams last week which indicate there’s more in their respective tanks. Each team bolted out of the gates to early leads triggered by dominant offense but they then went silent for a long stretch allowing their inferior opponents to hang around and easily cover their underdog numbers. UTSA was up 21-3 looking virtually unstoppable when mistakes and subpar OL play took over and even eliminated a 65 yd TD. The penalty/turnover laden string of series disrupted all rhythm but they still made it to 28 points with new starting QB Owen McCown going 28/38/340/73.7% & 3 TD’s. Texas State mirrored that script scoring easily on their first 2 drives behind veteran transfer QB Jordan McCloud but then a QB switch decision by HC GJ Kinne halted all momentum. McCloud returned after a few unproductive series netted 3 points and a missed 44 yd FG. He led a 14 play 80 yard drive that ended at the Lamar 1 yd line when they were stopped on 4th & goal leaving 7 more on the table. TSU scored on 3 of their first 4 2H possessions to hang on for the 34-27 but probably feel they should had 40+. Their 30 first downs and 486 total yards (213 rush / 273 pass) suggest that as well. Figure errors get ironed out this week and explosive back & forth scoring match takes charge here. Last year was quiet 20-13 final when Roadrunners QB Frank Harris & other significant pieces on offense were injured. Healthy sides for this one signal a fireworks display that climbs up and “over” the asking price.
