Analysis

The Seahawks have a track record of throwing all over the Lions in their recent matchups, and there’s no reason to believe that will change here. While Detroit has been solid against the run, they’ve been leaky in pass defense, ranking towards the bottom of the league in key categories.

Even though Seattle’s offensive line has some issues, with their two right tackles sidelined, the Seahawks can still put up big numbers through the air. As long as Geno Smith can avoid the occasional bad decision, Seattle’s offense will move the ball effectively.

Detroit’s running backsDavid Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs—could have big games against Seattle’s weak run defense, that might not be enough. The Seahawks have elite talent in the secondary, making it tough for Jared Goff to pass when he needs to. Seattle can limit Detroit’s big plays through the air, forcing them into more conservative, run-heavy game plans.

Goff’s success often depends on getting his team into favorable situations, but if the Seahawks can stop him in critical passing situations, that takes away a key part of Detroit’s game.

Detroit might be a good team, but they’re not blowing anyone away this year and with Sam LaPorta possibly limited due to injury, Goff could be without one of his favorite weapons. There’s also the question of how much effort they’re putting in during these regular season games, as they have their eyes set on postseason success.

The Seahawks are capable of keeping this game within a field goal, even if they don’t win outright.
