Analysis

Let's start with some league-wide numbers, then we can focus on the individual teams. Week 1 of the 2023 NFL schedule saw an average of 41 points per game, and 13 of those 16 games would have stayed comfortably under this total of 48. Arizona opened the season with a 20-16 loss at Washington and Buffalo opened the year with a 22-16 loss at the New York Jets. Low-scoring starts have been a constant during Sean McDermott's tenure in Buffalo. This will be McDermott's eighth year at the helm in Buffalo, and the Bills have scored an average of 18.7 points per game in his prior seven openers. Those seven Week 1 contests saw an average of 39.7 points per game. That's not a large sample size, but asking for a ten-point jump from the upper-30s to the upper-40s is quite a leap. Betting analyst Adam Chernoff spoke with Matt Parrino of Syracuse.com regarding the Bills' offseason changes: "Josh Allen has said there are 'many things different about this offense' specifically the amount of quick, short passing and play action game." So we've got a Bills' team that has started slow for nearly every Week 1 contest the last seven years, and now we're throwing in some offensive wrinkles with an unfamiliar wide receiver room surrounding QB Josh Allen. Bills beat writer Joe Buscaglia said, "Even after using their top choice on a wide receiver, this group is the weakest in several seasons." Buffalo's projected top four receivers for the upcoming season are Keon Coleman, Curtis Samuel, Khalil Shakir and Mack Hollins. Shakir is the only one that was on the Bills' roster last year. On the other side, Arizona's offense will likely be better with a healthy Kyler Murray and rookie receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. but head coach Jonathan Gannon puts his emphasis on the defensive side of the ball. With a lot less talent to work with, Gannon's Arizona defense performed comparably to the Eagles' defense that he left the year prior. If this game was later in the season, we could justify this total in the upper-40s. But in Week 1 with Buffalo going through a lot of turnover on offense, we make this number closer to 45.
