Analysis

(145) Temple at (146) Oklahoma

1% Oklahoma -42.0 (-110)

In October 2015, a ranked, undefeated Temple team hosted top-10 Notre Dame at Lincoln Financial Field in a nationally-televised nail-biter that was decided in the final seconds. Nine years later, Temple may be the worst FBS-level team in the country. What happened?! The Owls have essentially been a one-man team over the last two years with quarterback EJ Warner throwing for back-to-back 3,000-yard seasons. Warner is now at Rice, and Temple is left to pick up the pieces with a handful of quarterbacks that don't have any meaningful experience. The Owls are projected to return seven starters from last year's team, coming in at No. 130 out of 134 FBS teams in Bill Connelly's returning production metric. We do not project the Owls to be favored in any game this season. Oklahoma opened last year with a 73-point win over Arkansas State and a 49-point win over Tulsa. Both of those teams are/were better than what Temple is expected to put on the field this season. The Sooners are no strangers to putting up a big number on an inferior opponent, and in Oklahoma's first game as a member of the SEC, their feet will be firmly on the gas in this one. Excluding games against FCS-level opponents, teams that are favored by 37+ points in Week 1 are 17-1 against the spread (94%) with an average score of 56.8 to 7.9 since 2013.
