Analysis

We played against Ohio last week at Syracuse, and we admit that the Bobcats looked better than we were expecting. Ohio controlled the game early by playing keep-away in the first half. Running back Anthony Tyus III had 153 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 14 carries and quarterback Parer Navarro added 53 yards on the ground. Those were the positives, but the negatives that popped up in that game against Syracuse are going to be an issue again this week. Ohio's defense allowed Kyle McCord to throw for 345 yards and four touchdowns. Once Syracuse got out to a lead through the air and Ohio couldn't rely on the ground attack, the Bobcats couldn't keep up. Those same concerns are going to be an issue this week against a feisty South Alabama squad. The Jaguars' offense was dominant against North Texas, but they couldn't overcome mistakes on defense and special teams. South Alabama's average starting position was its own 15-yard-line, which was 24 yards worse than North Texas (39-yard-line). It took one game under the leadership of new head coach Major Applewhite for South Alabama QB Gio Lopez to break the school record for passing yards in a game. Lopez threw for 429 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions while adding 72 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The 0.36 EPA per play that South Alabama produced was in the top-5th percentile among offenses in Week 1. We see this game playing out very similarly to Ohio's game with Syracuse. Look for the Bobcats to run the ball early, but if South Alabama gets out to a lead and Ohio is forced to throw the ball, we don't believe Ohio is equipped to keep up with the Jaguars over the course of 60 minutes.
