Analysis

We were on Oklahoma last week against Temple, but that handicap was very much centered around the Owls' struggles and not as much on the positives for the Sooners. Temple turned the ball over six times, and depending on what advanced metric you'd like to use (EPA, success rate, etc.), likely put together the worst performance of any FBS-level team last week. Oklahoma's defense certainly did its job, but what about the offense? Starting QB Jackson Arnold was only 17-of-25 for 128 passing yards and was sacked three times. Star wide receiver Deion Burks was fantastic with three touchdown catches, but Arnold struggled to build chemistry with other receivers. Fellow starting receiver Jalil Farooq broke his foot in that game, so he will be out for at least the next six weeks. Oklahoma's offense ran 65 plays from scrimmage and only produced five explosive plays and the Sooners went 1-for-12 on third down. The Willie Fritz era in Houston opened with a dud as the Cougars' offense failed to score until the final minute of a 27-7 loss to UNLV. Houston has three quarterbacks on its roster that all have experience, and it sounds like Coach Fritz is going to continue giving all three a shot until one grabs the job with authority. Temple's defensive line was able to cause problems for Oklahoma's offensive line, and that could be an issue in this one. Coach Fritz is working with a different group in Houston than he was last year at Tulane, but who remembers what the Green Wave defense did against Ole Miss? Tulane's defense held the Rebels to 363 total yards and Ole Miss went 1-for-12 on third down. Coach Fritz knows how to make a game ugly against superior competition. His offense is not going to be able to compete with this Sooners defense, but he will dial a couple things up to frustrate Arnold and Oklahoma's short-handed offense.
