Analysis

It's the Red Bandanna game at Boston College, and the Eagles have traditionally given max effort on this special night. Michigan State is 3-0 and it looks like first-year head coach Jonathan Smith has things pointed in the right direction, but the Spartans are still a tier below Boston College in our opinion. Michigan State is bottom-5 in the country in penalties this season, and that's with two home games against Florida Atlantic and FCS-level Prairie View A&M. The green-and-white had not one, but two touchdowns called back by penalty in last week's win over PV A&M. Committing 11 penalties for 88 yards against an FCS-level opponent at home is not what you want to see before heading on the road to a raucous environment. Michigan State has committed double-digit penalties in each of its first three games (12, 10 and 11). Speaking of first-year head coaches, Bill O'Brien has things rolling ahead of schedule at BC. Boston College gave No. 7 Missouri a nice battle last week and the Eagles were up 14-3 in the second quarter before the Tigers' superior athletes took control in the second half. They won't have to worry about that in this one. Coach Smith brought a lot of players with him from Oregon State, but depth concerns were always going to be glaring when Sparty hit the grind of the Big Ten schedule in this first season. Michigan State's offensive line was already considered to be a weakness at the start of the season, and now that unit is missing some pieces. Look for BC to ride the wave of emotion toward a comfortable win under the lights.
