Luis Gil has had a very good season. A 3.39 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. But he’s already up to 124.2 innings this season, and you would think he would be on a pitch count. After all the last three seasons combined he only threw 33.1 big league innings. He would be a valuable bullpen arm in the playoffs, so the Yankees will be watching his innings closely. Despite his solid season he is only in the 5th percentile in walk rate, 18th percentile in ground ball rate, and 21st percentile in chase rate. It’s been 17 days since his last appearance.
Lefty Jordan Wicks returned to the mound and looked good against Washington, allowing a single earned run in five innings. He had been on the IL the previous ten weeks. Unlike Gil, his arm is much fresher with only 33 big league innings this season. The Cubs offense has been on fire the last 13 games, so we expect Chicago to get to this Yankees pitching staff. Especially considering the questions with the back of the bullpen.
