THE PLAY: Total Under 177.5 (-110)
Indiana and Atlanta just met on Thursday in Indiana, with the Dream coming away with a 108–101 victory for a combined 209 points. The total in that matchup closed around 173.5, and for Saturday’s rematch the number has been adjusted upward to 177.5. On the surface, it might look like the books are simply reacting to the recent final score, but a deeper look at how that game got to 209 suggests some clear regression angles.
Both offenses were extremely efficient in that first meeting. Atlanta shot 54% from the field and Indiana was even better at 56%. That kind of combined shooting clip is difficult to sustain, especially in a back-to-back matchup where both coaching staffs can make defensive adjustments and emphasize tighter rotations on the key scorers. Even a modest dip in shooting percentages for one or both sides pulls the total back toward the mid-170s.
Three-point and free-throw variance also played a big role. The teams combined for 15 made three-pointers, and more importantly, they lived at the foul line, attempting a combined 64 free throws. That’s a huge volume of clock-stopping scoring opportunities. Unless this game turns into the same kind of whistle-fest, it’s unlikely we see that many freebies again. Fewer trips to the stripe and a bit more normal three-point production will naturally drag the scoring pace down.
With the market pushing this number up to 177.5 off an outlier shooting and foul game, there’s value in looking the other way. The boxscore factors that drove Thursday’s 209-point result are unlikely to fully replicate, making the inflated total a target.
PLAY UNDER 177.5 in Indiana/Atlanta.
