THE PLAY: Name the Finalists: Judd Trump & Mark Selby (+850)

The pinnacle of the snooker season starts tomorrow morning, lasting 17 days. Over the course of the event, I expect to have various bets on the outright market but at this early stage, not that much really stands out. I do, however, believe this rather obvious outcome will look a lot more obvious in a week's time. Trump is tournament favourite in the bottom half of the draw, while Selby is rated favourite to emerge from the top half. The former has won this title once but hasn't been all that reliable over this longer format. I strongly expect him to arrive hungry, fresh and in good enough form to brush aside early opponents before it gets trickier in the second week. Selby is a four-time champion and a master of these conditions. He should improve as the tournament goes on but has been relatively fortunate in his first round opponent, Ben Woollaston, a friend whose (inferior) game he knows inside out. Take these odds now, and hopefully we will be able to reconsider when they are much shorter in due course.

Top batsman and top bowler markets are ones I only play rarely as its hard to get a consistent edge over the books. However in this case, I think they're too high about the Rajasthan captain, and over-reacting to a recent losing run. He hasn't finished as their top-scorer for 10 matches, but last season did so 6 out of 14. Therefore, taking these odds each time over the two seasons would have yielded around 26% profit overall. Moreover, he has been playing well, making substantial innings in 4 of the last 5 Rajasthan games. He looks well due a big, 50-plus innings, and conditions at his home ground of Jaipur are likely to be conducive.

I’ve been gambling literally every day since childhood. After discovering soccer coupons aged 13, I became the school bookie. At 18, I worked at the dog track and in betting shops. I would either bet or lay bets on anything from sports to next song would play next on the radio.

It was non-stop, crazy, fun, indisciplined, until I went to uni aged 25. Then I realised the value of specialisation and prioritising. From there, I focused and mastered a few niche areas - cricket, golf, snooker, politics and in 2003, gambling became my main living.

For two decades, I’ve also been an analyst covering my areas for various outlets, most notably Betfair. I helped pioneer political betting in the UK and USA, analysing it for big political outlets such as Politico and on TV, before US elections became the biggest betting event on Earth. In 2020, I was Betfair's US Election Ambassador.

Since 2019, I've been a co-host of Betfair's cricket podcast, Cricket Only Bettor. Since 2021, I've combined all those roles with being a senior oddsmaker for BetOnline.
