MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE – THOMAS & MACK CENTER / LAS VEGAS, NV
Favorite – New Mexico +250 – (Defending Champs – beat San Diego State 68-61 in last year’s title game)
As the #1 seed they have the easiest path – Open with winner of #8 vs #9 game San Jose State & Wyoming
They then play San Diego State- Boise State winner – Lobos split the regular season series with each of those teams
After that it would likely be either #2 Colorado State or #3 Utah State for the Championship and they swept both of those teams this year
Overall they are one of 3 teams that in Mountain West play ranked in side the Top 4 in Offensive Efficiency / Defensive Efficiency / Offensive & Defensive Rebounding%
Boise State & Colorado State the other 2 / They are the only team that adds TO% & forced TO% to that list
They’re the fastest pace team & the most complete team
Longshot – No Real Longshot Here Is Likely to Win the Tournament
Really wanted to try Boise State at +425 but the path is so difficult for them and San Diego State
First they have to play each other…then in all likeliehood one will play New Mexico & then probably the Colorado State-Utah State winner…that’s a tough 3 night road
#6 UNLV has homecourt but is simply too banged up…they are playing with a ton of heart and effort right now but winning 4 in 4 nights is to much to ask
Injury list just got longer when Julian Rishwain got hurt in their final game AND even if leading scorer PG Dedan Thomas returns he’s missed the L6G
Questionable whether he can immediately & smoothly transition back into the lineup
Teams 8-10 are after thoughts & #7 Nevada has not defeated a team in the Top 4 seedings all season long
Choice To Win – New Mexico at +250
#2 Colorado State doesn’t have a starter over 6’7” but they are physical, defensive oriented & shoot the ball overall better than any team in the tournament
They have not won the conference tournament since 2003 but at +350 they could get this done since their path consists of basically 2 wins…Utah State and then revenge vs New Mexico
First Round Play To Watch For
Nevada -12 vs Fresno State – Fresno outside of their arena has now lost 4 of their L5G by 25, 23, 24 & 22
Nevada offensive & defensive metrics say they’re better thatn their record and they beat Fresno by 25 last time they played
Figure HC Steve Alford will have them ready

Consultant Bio
Rob Veno has been entrenched in the sports handicapping community for 31 years. He was a major component in the success of Sportsmemo from its inception as a daily radio show in 1998. His 5% Bluechip releases have become synonymous with success, and he's carved a place for himself among the nation's elite handicappers. Rob's fundamental analysis of football, basketball, and baseball on the college and pro levels has him regarded as one of the best in the business at breaking down games. Rob began to make an imprint on the Las Vegas scene in the mid-1990s with his weekly football and basketball newsletter, which contained game selections and analysis. Over 30 sportsbooks on and off the strip, plus the famous Las Vegas Gambler's Book Club and newsstands nationwide, carried the publication, which expanded his recognition. He was subsequently invited into Las Vegas' most prestigious handicapping contests of that time, the Stardust Invitational in 1996 and 2004 and the Sunset Station Invitational in 2000. A veteran of sports handicapping radio, Rob began in 1992 by co-hosting a weekly Friday night show at 840 AM KVEG. He went on to do numerous live shows as a guest analyst from casino sportsbooks across the Las Vegas Valley, working with a litany of respected hosts and the most recognized handicappers in the business. Rob finally settled in as one of the mainstays on the daily Vegas Sportswire betting show, which ultimately became the famed Sportsmemo Radio Show and subsequent Podcast. His expertise has been heard on radio stations across the country over the years as he has done a multitude of guest analyst segments. Rob joined WagerTalk in the summer of 2020 and has quickly become a prominent member of their world-class handicapping roster. Rob is a Connecticut native, and after spending 11 years in Las Vegas from 1991-2002, he now resides outside of Philadelphia with his wife.
